Following on from this story about a murdered teacher, her mother has put in this petition to stop violent internet pron. Now this may or may not be distasteful to people but would a ban on it make things like this stop happening?

Could this have tipped him over the edge?

If it was a factor, would a ban do anything to stop people getting hold of it if they really want to?

What can be done to stop people acting out "fantasies"?

In my opinion, if a guy can do this, he probably would have done it without being able to see photos of this and no amount of banning would help. I don't think anything short of personality profiling people for any dangerous traits would help and if you are clever, this can probably be manipulated.

Tyco, if you could choose a topic title, what would it be?

Couldn't think of one so just left it blank.....

It's like when you close the front door and realise you have left the keys inside... you remember it 1/4 second before the door shuts and it would take you 1/2 second to reach the door.....

People are always blaming movies/songs/Internet for the fact that some people are just plain evil.

What should be banned on the internet is child pornograhy and any depiction of real violence. If it's just some actors and actresses(over18) there is no harm done.

That is what I was thinking, what did they blame for making Peter Sutcliffe do what he did? As has been said, some people are just evil and screwed up.

Typical reaction of todays society.

I dont like it and cant understand how anyone else could so it should be banned.

Along with about a million other things which are pointlessly banned or have tried to be banned

If you ban something, you create a black market economy for it. There will always be someone willing to step in and supply what certain individuals want.

Banning something doesn't automatically mean it will go away.

People have been doing these things long before the internet came along and probably long before anything came along. Banning it wont help at all imho infact I think it could do the complete opposite, if people cant get these kind of "kicks" from the internet i reckon they would try and find it some other way.

Do you not think though, that having easy access to violent porn images on the internet might cause a susceptible person to be in a constantly hyped up state, enough to eventually carry out the act(s) for real? I don't know, it's just a thought.

Every so often someone comes along insisting that images on Tv, t'internet, video games, films etc influence people to commit terrible crimes.

So far, in the last two decades, I've seen no evidence to indicate that is the truth.

Were there any evidence, it would have been pushed down the throat of every politican worldwide by such people as say, Jack Thompson, any "mothers against..." type of group etc etc.

Remember the calls to ban "ntural born killers" when someone performed some copycat murders in France? Or someone suing videogame makers after the columbine shootings when they claimed "Doom" (or was it quake?) caused the kids to do it.

There is evidence that explicit images of sex or violence cause a degree of desensitisation towards other images, but no evidence that it desensitises people about the real thing. (I can watch chainsaw massacre films 7 days a week, but have a tendency to feel lightheaded watching someone have an injection!)

I believe that there are some people out there who are nutters. They arent affected by the normal rules of society. Would watching images like that or playing games like that inspire a nutcase to go out on a killing spree? or would they have done so anyway? Probably a bit of both. However I dont beleive we can restrict the 99.9% of the human race based on the 0.1% (or less) utter dribbling nutcase element.

There are some things I find distastefull, however within reason, so long as the actions depicted werent actually illegal (ie fake film violence is fine, its simulated and not illegal vs iraqi beheading films - which are a real illegal and sick act.) then I would fight any call for them to be banned.

Its another form of the "We dont trust people to watch what they want as we believe differently".

Its the same arguement used by the ASA to ban car adverts showing a car going fast (might cause people to speed, which will kill everyone in a ten mile radius!) just a slight difference in scale.
