Saw the brilliant Jimmy Perry this lunchtime he of writing fame for "Dads Army", "Hi-de-hi" and "It 'aint half hot mum". A sprightly 82 years old. Funny when you always hear of how few of the Dad's Army cast are left but you rarely get the writer mentioned.

They don't make writers like him anymore

Didn't she live in 'boro anyway? I seem to remember a book (a bit of an ethnography ) called Union Street.

Me and my dad in a bar, Bono ( U2 fame ) is sitting there having a quiet one, I pull my dad back and say " dad, don't look now but Bono from U2 is sitting there", to which he looks at him and walks up, shakes Bono hands and says " hello Bono I'm Ben's dad, just thought I would say hello" and walked off.

So now I have died of shame, sitting there cringing at the fact my dad has been super uncool with a man who refuses to take his hat and sunglasses off anywhere, Bono comes over and buys us both a pint ( I really wanted a G&T but though a pint of pride would be better considering it was a mtv music hall of famer asking), didn't stay for a chat though. Don't blame him, my dad would have bored him to death with tales of when he was a drummer.

On my way to the last Guildford totty meet, just coming out the station, I passed Adam Hart-Davis. I'm still convinced it was this exciting distraction that caused me to go the the wrong pub...
