Spotted a young, distressed looking German Sheppard dog running around on the road near to my house last night. It had a choke chain on but I couldn't see a identity tag.
I couldn't get near it & it was clearly in a state of anxiety. So I soon as I got home I phoned the Police.
In the past I've reported several stray dogs/livestock & the Police have always dealt with it. On this occasion, the pleasant sounding woman who answered my call informed me that they couldn't trouble an Officer with the problem, I had to resist making a sarcy comment about distracting them from hounding motorists etc., but was happy to give me the telephone no. of the Dog Warden.
So I phoned the D/W & got an answer machine message asking for name, address, tel. no. etc. etc. Also gave an emergency no. I thought that as the dog could easily cause a RTA, I'd phone this no. I let the phone ring for 12mins. before I hung up & left a message on the answer machine. So far haven't heard a thing!
I know on the scale of things a stray dog is way down the list of priorities, but the potential for an accident with a dark coloured dog running around on a dark road was fairly high IMO.
Since when have the Police stopped caring about dogs running around on the roads?
I'm aware that I'm sounding like grumpy old g*t, so I'll stop ranting.

Ever since the lad who was best man at my wedding had the urine extracted something rotten when he walked back to the station with a stray dog on a lead made from a length of hairy string.

Think he wished he'd had a quid for every wag making a comment re police budgets. Oh how we laughed.

You should have reported that it appeared to be carrying a small explosive device. They would soon have found the dog.

LOL.
Sad thing is Malc that rightly or wrongly, you do get the impression that someone exceeding the speed limit is more important to the BiB. IMO this dog was far more likely to cause an accident than a driver slightly exceeding the speed limit.
Let's not forget that the dog was also freaked out & for all we know may have been abandoned/chucked out of a car & it would have been nice if it could have been looked after ASAP.
I didn't recognise it as a local dog.

You need to call the RSPCA nowadays, not the police. I keep the number in my mobile, just in case... 08705555999. Useful for when a deer decides to take on the front of your pride and joy.

Thnks for the no. I've put it on my mob. I did consider phoning them, but hoped I'd hear back from the Dog Warden fairly quickly.
I remember when all Police stations had a kennel or holding area for stray dogs.
Cheaper to pass the responsibility to charities I suppose!

Saw two dogs walking along the A24 in the summer between Horsham and Worthing. Cars were stopping or swerving. Got me bird to call sussex police, and they put us straight through to 999. I think if there was a risk of an accident, then 999 is the one to call. At least your concience is clear if there is an accident.

Yep, that's a good way to get some attention. I would also ask the desk girl at the police station to make a log entry in case the owner calls to report a dog missing. The council dog warden is also a good number to call. They usually reply fairly quickly but maybe that depends on the workload.

I carry a spare lead in the car in case I meet a stray

Should have told the operator that it looked like a young wolf. Don't think the council do Wolf Wardens yet.

We stopped and picked up a stray dog last year. Phoned the BIB and was told that we would have to look after it until the next day and then take it to a rescue kennels. If we did not want to do that then we should just let it go again

Yep, that's what happens. You become responsible for it until you hand it over to them. Then they kennel it until the rspca or whoever calls the next day. You can take it to the police station where there should be a kennel.

There was a post on another forum (policespecials.com) on this subject. The thread mentioned that the police are (or were until very recently) responsible for taking on strays but the responsbility is soon to move (or has) moved to the council who should provide the service.

Still no reply from the Dog Warden!
If the council are in charge of stray dogs now, which appears to be the case, good luck to any strays in the Bath area.
The infamous Bath council, what can I say, the words P*ss Up & Brewery come to mind!

I reckon the Cat and Dog Home on Claverton Down (by Bath Uni) are your best bet for this sort of thing.

Your right, It's near to our house & we support it.
However, It's a charity & I feel that the problem should initially be dealt with ASAP by the Police or a Dog Warden as it is in the public interest to get stray dogs under control quickly.
Maybe the Dog Warden did go & find the dog, but it would have been nice if someone had replied to my message.
If I could have caught it myself I would have done.
