The DAB radio in the 111R
Discussion
The system, I'm sure you will agree , is pants ! If you sit and play with the diff settings ...its still pants. Is it the speakers, or the fact that the system is lacking in watts ? Now, i don't want to spend my hard earned on mega ice, when a cheap run of the mill kenwood will do the job more than admirably. What i want to know is whether the speakers are up to it, if they are doubtful, then whats the alternative ?
Theres been some threads in the past about alternative systems - have a search through.
I've not managed to get mine to sound better - only really listen to the radio in traffic / cruising now because the quality is so poor.
Tried a retro Prodigy CD out on my trip today but with the QSilver under acceleration and the poor speakers, I soon tuned back into Today on Radio4 (getting old you see).

I have the 54 and I dont have any problems with it. Westover's replaced the 53 with the 54. The old 53 would not hold on to a radio station and would skip a brand new cd at tickover. They replaced it with the 54 which is fine, no problems. Now, if I could get it to play mp3's I would be really happy!

Mine plays mp3 discs which I burned on my laptop no problem. But in gereral there is a lack of bass, I have yet to fiddle with the settings but is sounds like I'm not going to improve the bass much. I must also get round to buying one of those little memory card things that slot in, could get plenty of music on a 1Gb card.
Maybe i have just not got the hang of setting it up correctly. I sat in the car for an hour trying various this and that's, just cant seem to get the sound quality any where near the Kenwood unit i currently have in my van. There is no base sound, just the speakers sounding like cardboard. That's why i wanted to know if its the speakers or the head .Will try the kenwood in the lotus and report back...
Now wheres the lock de-icer...

I tried loading a memory card with mp3's and it wouldnt read it. Also what was interesting, while it was serviced the batery was disconnected. The radio would not work untill the original memory card was re-inserted. It contains some sort of activation code. I am not sure if you can use the SD slot / card for mp3's. Even if you can, dont loose the one that comes with the unit.
I never expected (or wanted) huge sound from the stereo. You are in a light weight plastic and aluminium box that is about the best driving m/c around. The stereo is a low rate consideration.
I really laugh at the guys who put on the loudest and most outragous exhaust and de cat then complain that they cant hear the muzak. Eh? no sh!t shuurlok?
If it was about listening to the radio, then get a Lexus or better still spend quite a few £k on a propper set up for your home.

Here here... or is it hear hear ????
I hardly ever use my radio as now I have a second car the only times I take the Liz up are to go for a blast and i'd rather listen to the engine / exhaust (even though no larini) any day

Take your point about having loud exhaust fitted etc etc, i just feel that on occasion when on a long journey, i want to hear some decent music through a decent system. We dont all drive around at full speed, grinning like a Cheshire cat because we have a loud exhaust that we want to listen to. I do like some other stimulation while traveling down the M4 thinking oh god, only another two hundred miles to go !
I found that loading the fader towards the front speakers (Fader 3 to front) gave a better base. Also try adjusting X-Bass Page 119 in sterio manual. I find the DAB reception very poor, get a great signal on my home system, doesn't even register in the car. Thinking about getting an ariel upgrade at first service (only 600 miles to go before the engine can be set free)
