Tyical import duties

Well I am in the process of putting various shopping lists together for all things car related. A number of items will come from the US and in my costings so far I was assuming an import duty of 20% with VAT on top of that! But to my surprise an example given in Kitcar magazine suggests on a NOS kit for example only 4% duty is due!
Is this correct?
Can I assume 4% on all engine related parts?.
And what about electronics (read ECU kit) and say a wideband oxygen sensor/controller?

I did mean Typical, Doh.

I have memories of paying something like 20% when I imported my engine. Or is that becasue it was a complete unit, am I wrong, or have things changed in the last couple of years?

That's what I paid too. 4% duty (because it's car parts) + VAT

Standard Duty is 10% then there's the dreaded Vat at 17.5% on top...

But if you state that it's for the Hobby then the Duty is lowered to 4.5%..

You have to have the goods sent to your Home address, as I found they charged me the full amount when I sent it to my works address by mistake....

So 22% total plus shipping is possable..

And they always add the duty to the price including shipping.

so (((goods + shipping ) + duty )+ admin fee ) + vat )

Figure about 80% of the $ price in pounds is about right.
