Court ruling threatens Monza race

Monza's future as host of the Italian Grand Prix could be in peril after a court ruled cars racing there must have silencers to reduce noise pollution.

Judge Marco Manunta upheld complaints from residents of the town of Biassono.

The Gazzetta dello Sport said he called motor racing a "superfluous, dangerous and socially useless activity that had a major impact on the environment".

"At this moment in time we would not be able to host F1," said circuit director Enrico Ferrari, who vowed to appeal.

The circuit is co-owned by the municipalities of Monza and the city of Milan, and city officials said they were confident their appeal would be successful.

"It is right to protect the environment but it is also right that we should avoid excesses that might wipe out important traditions," said Milan deputy major, Riccardo De Corato.
Funny, I'd say the same about him...

Shocking that people with such extreme views should be in positions of high authority and able to make such decisions.

One of Max's favourite tactics is suggesting a plan that no-one is happy about then reaching a compromise that fits his vision. What I can only hope is that the FIA immediately suspends all World Championship activity from Italy with immediate effect. The panic that will ensue (Which would be extremely damaging to the economy in the Monza region and hopefully affect the nimbys very badly) will result in the Italian Government, cap in hand, overruling the judgement. Max should then return all World Championship activity but as punishment, reinstate only 1 race. Thus solving the problem of 2 races in one country when F1 wants to expand into new territories.

I expect this kind of crap here, but Italy??

Once a year occasion (if you discount testing), if you look at the Monza Park where the track is, you will see it is surrounded by habitation. I'm sure most of it is recent urban expansion but I bet no one mentioned the impact on the environment all those extra people have caused to the area. And I wonder how many of thise who have complained have recently moved in as I doubt older residents and families would complain.

The emmissions from the cars are minimal compared to the emmissions generated by spectators coming to the track.

The same emmissions are generated by spectators travelling to all sporting events. Football matches for example happen about once a week in Milan (two teams in the same stadium, remember).

Sport is unkind to the environment.

Motor Racing has positive social aspects too:

provides enjoyment and relaxation
provides employment for thousands of people
advances science and technology
etc. etc.

This sort of madness drives me insane. There is a tradition in Britain, of people moving into houses next to airfields that have been there for donkeys years, only for them to start complaining about the noise levels. Sadly, this is not just a British affliction as the Italian neighbours of the Monza race circuit are proving. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the local judge has said that motorsport is a ‘superfluous, dangerous and socially useless activity that had a major impact on the enviroment’ Socially useless ? The judge chooses to ignore the many thousands of Italian jobs reliant on this racetrack and the likes of Ferrari who would not exist if it were not for racing. Just like Castle Combe, the wishes of the few affect the wishes of the many.

Not many years ago, such comments in Ferrari’s heartland would have earned the slightly bonkers judge a good hiding, dear old Enzo must be rolling in his grave at the idiocy of some of his countrymen.

I've thought about this a bit more and have decided that it is easier to demonstrate the social usefullness of motorsport than it is for football. Where did ABS and traction control start...?
