Porsche flat 6 crankshaft bearings

Hi all

The Porsche flat sixes, do they run 7 or 8 main bearings, or do some run 7 and others 8? I ask because different sources quote different numbers, and I'm getting quite confused as to which should be correct. Is it even possible that the earlier ones were 8 and the later ones seven?

7 for the 993 air-cooled engine. Six sets of 'normal' bearings, plus a bigger, beefy one by the flywheel connection hub.

996's are a different design with vertically split gear cases, but these appear to have 7 slots for bearing shells too.
