Premiums for Cayman orders
Discussion
This "Cayman for sale" page really does confuse me www.pistonheads.com/sales/list.asp?p=1&s=487
The reason is, upon calling official Porsche dealers I was offered build slots in any month I want from December onwards.
If anyone was thinking of paying a premium for a slot, call your local dealer(s) and challenge what they say (ie. their first comment is likely to imply there are huge queues... until they find out another can deliver quicker!), then consider the offers on that page (and ebay).
They're certainly not worth more than the seller paid - if anything, less.

Don't agree, Cayman's will do very well, wait until you drive one ..apparently.
Most of my dealers are quoting 4-5 months delivery although they are producing higher volumes to accomodate a bigger demand then 1st thought for launch....Never pay overs for anything though....i hate speculators, scum! but i think you'll be able to run one from new for 6 months and only drop 2-3k.
Soon be able to tell you ..my car has just left the factory, here for launch.

I called my dealer who said 5 months. I then called another who said 3 months, and another who said 2 months. I took this back to the original dealer and <ping!> they can also do 2 months.
Don't be pressured by a dealer telling horror stories of dates - they can all squeeze an order in to suit if they think your cash is going to a competitor.
I agree i was thinking about a cayman
and was offered a Nov car with no proplem
I think there will be a flood of cars on the market so i hope the people who have got them for proffit get stuck with them.
why i turned it down in the end was even with being very scant on the extra's and missing off stuff i wanted
the car still came to 49k
and a nice spec was 53k
but you could spend 60k with no problem.
this always kills the second hand market also, come pt ex time the stealer says its a 43k car when we all know its a 50k car so you end up losing 8k before you even start.
Even the good head lights are a option which i think is unactceptable on a 43k S model car.
so there over priced and to expensive for me at that price when you can get a mk2 GT3 second hand.

Interesting the waiting times quoted. My OPC is saying Sept'06. That may be the oficial line but as people say, the list is something of a black art and I think Dealer Principles have considerable flexibility. The next few months will be interesting. Waiting lists for the Boxster rocketed once the car was physically in the showrooms.

My insurance company said that most Porsche buyers (not Cayman-specific) add no more than 10% to the base cost with options. Which means only 4k on the Cayman, to around 7k on a 997C4S, I guess. Since many options cost the same whichever car you purchase, I don't quite follow the 10% logic - perhaps some people add almost nothing to their Boxsters and base 911s?
From posts so far I reckon most Caymans will be around the 50k mark including options.
Yes, the GT3 argument is a strong one, but I think they key is that the Cayman should be a more general-purpose car and maybe less intimidating for inexperienced drivers.
It is definately easy to over-spec a car. Mine comes in at £47.5K which is just under 10% on options. I reckon that's about right for resale. I've gone for metalic paint, BOSE, Full leather and climate which I think gives the car strong selling points. You never get your cash back when you spec sat-nav, special paint/interiors and just about every other option going.
I've never understood the fuss with sat-nav. How is it only last week I went to my brother's new flat for the first time. I'd never been to the area before. I look at a map, and knock me down with a feather - I drive straight there! Just like motorists have managed to do for the last 100 years or so.
The vast majority of people I know with sat-nav confess that they rarely use it. Largely due to the fact that the majority of journeys made are familiar routes. I know that they can incorporate speed camera locations, give traffic updates etc... but again how often is that really used? You can still be caught in a laser speed trap anyway.

I have to agree with Scott on the issue of sat nav.. Yes its a great toy & can tell you how late for a meeting you are going to be but I personally don't believe its the be-all and end-all. My biggest concern having recently had a Cayenne S hire car with sat nav in is that it distracts you from looking at the road whilst you are busy fannying around pushing buttons and changing routes etc...

I think you'l find they are much harder to sell without sat/nav,i would'nt buy a new porsche without one unless it was a gt3.
Me either. A luxury car needs to have toys!
I have a tomtomgo at the moment, and its a complete faff to take it out the car every time I park. The screen is also too small compared to a factory fit unit.
