that time of year again - heater question

Just got back from driving the 4?0 round to give some new filler a test - (see if the cracks reappear !) and it's bl**dy cold down south.
So thought I would try and get some heat out of the heater - nuffing

On examination in the doctors surgery back home a few questions arise

I still have no sticker telling me what the controls should be doing, but the bottom one is moving the heater valve in the engine bay, so I'm assuming the following

Bottom control to the left is hot and to the right is cold ?
Top control is left for interior vents and right for screen demist ?

However my next question arises whilst looking at the valve, to me it seems to be in the wrong place as there is a bypass hose above the valve (goes from 3/4 pipe to the othe 3/4 pipe running down / under manifold)

To me the valve should be above the bypass so that when the valve is shut the water would still flow around the pipes and not to the heater ?
What location is anyone elses ?

I assume if I take the valve out I should get heat all the time in the cabin once I switch the heater fan on ?

Need to get heat in there as the dog was shivering with the roof down earlier

Paul, you're right, the upper control is left for cabin(feet) centre for fascia vents and right for demist. The temp. control below should be left for cold and right for hot (or in my case mildly lukewarm). Mine also has a bybass hose which I think has the effect of passing some of the hot flow straight back to the engine, rather than through the heater. I've installed a tap in that bypass hose to allow it to be closed off when its cold. I think its helped a bit, but because I have an uprated rad. and am still running a 74 degree 'stat, the heater doesn't push out much in the way of warmth.

I was wrong, it is as you say it is right for hot, as just taken the valve off. Sounds like a good idea on a valve on the relief as on one of my previous hose upgrades I put in a large bore (3/40 inch) pipe with decent T pieces instead of a very fiddly and brittle reducer to 1/4. Clamped together with grips and could actually feel all the pipes get hot.

Maybe if I put the heater control valve in the bypass that would have the same effect ? Is your proper original heater valve above or below the bypass ?

The original valve is below the bypass, directly after one of the two metal pipes which go under the inlet manifold. Not sure moving the valve to the bypass would work in practice, as the hose is small diameter and the heater valve is comaparatively big and probably needs some stability to counter the force of the actuating cable. I find a hat and Sparco race gloves work well

Yeh, I know, I've got an 82 degree one I need to fit for the colder months. Its not quite so important with my set up, as the warm-up enrichment cuts out above 50 degrees c, unlike the Lucas systems which I don't think finally cut out until 80 degrees c.
