The little metal bit on old Nikkor lenses
Discussion
As a student I remember noticing the little silver bracket that distinguished Nikon-fit lenses from all others. I think it connected with a doofah on old Nikon bodies. I'm now the proud owner of a s/h Nikkor 35mm f1.4 (AIS I believe) so I have my first silver bracket!!
However it's not going to connect with anything on a D70 or even a D200 (from what I can gather from the pix of it). So my question is - can I just unscrew it or will I break something?

The 'doofar' was used to set the maximum aperture of each lens on the old Photomic Head.
If you remove it, no harm will be done; you will though have two small holes unless you put the screws
back.
The only reason FOR removing it, was because on some slightly later bodies when it was not needed,
you could see a 'shadow' of it as it passed through its central position in front of some viewfinder
information which was illuminated by daylight

"Many a good tune played on an old fiddle" my old man used to say. Any chance of posting some images taken with your "classic"
It struck me that good glass never goes out of date... in fact I've only just realised it's still a current model! www.europe-nikon.com/details.aspx?countryid=20&languageid=22&prodId=301&catId=134
(edited to say actually not quite; mine is subtley different)
I'd like it a bit wider but I'd lose aperture.
I'm not sure that the web is really the place to show off lens performance though, unless I'm going to post c/u's of edge performance etc, and frankly I can't be bothered
