A lot of dumped people round here recently..

Of all the advice and platitudes wheeled out, something has been missing. Music matters.

I don't know about anyone else here, but music is my lifeline in a lot of situations.. I have varied tastes to suit every mood and demeanour..

If I'm feeling sad and indulgent, I'll play music that matches my mood - Radiohead, Depeche Mode, Coldplay, Elbow, Turin Breaks etc when I'm down.

Sometimes that's no bad thing but there are times when such indulgence is a very bad idea. If you've just been dumped, for chrissake put the Radiohead, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Joy Division and Morrissey out of reach.

Instead, pick stuff that cannot fail to lift you or at least distract you and channel some of the negative energy.. try Soundgarden, Metallica, System of a Down, Tool, Faith No More, Rage against the Machine etc... or for a lift, consider Super Furry Animals, SuperGrass, The Jam (not Weller - his solo stuff is all divorce fodder), Fat Boy Slim, Chemical Brothers, Leftfield, PJ Harvey (curiously), The Specials, The Shirehorses, Gomez etc.. Pink Floyd are high up in both categories too..

What sayeth ye all?

Oh, and noisy violent DVDs kick ass too

All I have to say is that I saw Underworld in Bristol Acadamy last Monday.

They rocked my world.

I felt a lot better afterwards.

(And meeting a nice young lady called Claire didn't hurt either....)

Agreed - Gigs are a brilliant lift.. I've only done a couple this year and they've both been Lamb... (superb in an outdoor arena at night - well, better than in a sideroom at the Brighton Centre). I went to the Fat Boy Slim thing on the beach, but frankly stayed well out of the way and took great advantage of being based at a flat on Hove seafront..

That's the only thing I miss about living in London. Brixton Academy, Shepherds Bush Empire, Kentish Town Form, LA2.

Went to see the Brian Setzer Orchestra at the Shep Bush Empire in 2001 – all the West London teds and rockabillies all came out to play – superb stuff!

you know, someone the other day was harping on about how great Puddle of Mudd are.. now, they might have doen a couple of good tunes, but show me one thing they've done that hasn't been done previously by Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden or Alice in Chains..

I mean, where's the originality.. ?

Talking of feeling old, I'm off to see Gary Moore on Thursday. Of course in my day all guitar music sounded like this blah blah

Great advice Carzee.

When my sister was living abroad last year and feeling really low I told her to listen to at least an hour's music a day. "I haven't got a stereo or any of my music with me!" she wailed. "Well go and buy a minidisc walkman and record stuff at your friends house then" was my answer. She did, and she was cured.

Puddle of Mudd...

Pearl Jam, STP, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were all great. I reckon that if the latest Peral Jam album had been done by a "teen" band like Sum 41 or whatever, then it'd be hailed as record of the year or something... rather than a "very good for ageing grungers".

Someone was going on the other day on MTV saying how innovative mixing rap and metal was... er... Rage Against the Machine... early Chillis... hello?

Nothing "different" or "original" out there at the moment... same old churned out stuff. I remember getting the first Limp Bizkit album the day it came out... it was fantastic.. then MTV got hold of it and it all went downhill...

disagree - I going to clean up my earth - and build a heavan on the ground - is an inspirational song

and certainly doesn't fit with your otherwise excellent analysis of "music to slash your wrists by" - The Album

I would add - leonard cohen, some Lou Reed and David Gray to those mentioned

Other weller classics - Changing Man, Wild Wood and Pebbles on the beach - are all describing the effects of change or displacement from an established postion
thoughtful contemplative stuff.

Wild Wood and Stanley Road were pretty good - the latter almost a great IMHO. Heavy Soul was OK, Heliocentric was appalling... he'd lost his agression. Latest offering has some glimses of his past - and that song with Kelly Jones is a blinder.

Saw him at Hyde Park earlier this year... EXCELLENT gig... seen him live twice and would go again.

Which reminds me... Stereophonics are pretty good too in my book.

You mean getting divorced?

edit: Don't get me wrong - I like Weller's stuff, but it doesn't help one jot when I'm in the doldrums...

Stereophonics... hmm.. yeah - they're good, but they bore me to tears now - same ole same ole.. their career has rested upon playing every Festival gig on the planet and doing sod all innovative. Their first album was the best; their third the weakest..

all IMO of course

Indeed - Just ignore I am a bit of a Jam/Style Council/weller anorak. have virtually everything recorded by these. Favourite still remains Modern World.

I guess if my mood needs lifting - music of choice would be - anything currently in the charts ... Never fails to make me laugh hysterically

Buy James albums - sell anything by rose royce
