I've just been out for a drive... towards the end of that drive, I passed a Truvelo camera, which I already knew was there, but the camera is on the side of the road to catch southbound motorists, so I never gave it much thought. I only glanced at it, and I usually tend not to push my luck even if I think I'm on the wrong side of the road to be caught... but I admit I may have been doing up to an indicated 35 (possibly not that high, but I was not speedo watching). However, I got up to the camera, and it was pointing at my side of the road... so there was a truvelo on the right hand side pointing at me.

Can they do this? I thought they had to be on the same side of the road as the cars they are trying to catch?

I don't believe there's any legal requirement - there're two on the A46 west of Stratford, about a mile apart, that change facing regularly. So while you may get lucky and be obscured by a van/truck, if they do get you it's a fair cop.

The speed measurement is taken from the road surface (buried sensors in each lane). There is not a problem having the camera pointing in either direction.

Absolutely blue - induction loops a short distance in front of the camera - A46 ones have induction loops on both sides of the road, so they're set to face both ways.

Ah...the A46 ones have the loops offset (i.e. not in one line across the road, but 2 half-lines the same distance either side of the camera). Sooo...what happens if you set the "wrong one" off - and you haven't yet passed the camera, 'cause it's facing the other way. Does this mean you can't get "done" from behind by a Truvelo?!?

[pedantic]
Truvelos don't use induction loops (not accurate enough over such a short distance), they actually use two independent pairs of buried piezo sensors.

The info you need can be found at www.truvelouk.com

The cameras just take the pictures, its the safety camera partnerships that do you from behind!

most of the cameras in bedfordshire are set to take pics of the front of the vehicle alledgedly so they can get lorry drivers as the rear shot ones take a pic of the side of the vehicle not the reg plate .

Plus its alot harder to say that you can't remember who was driving if there's a big shot of your ugly mug on it!
