what would you have to do and what would be the cost of taking a standard 964 C2 and modding it so that it approaches RS spec.

Different ideas on weight saving, increasing power and suspension set-ups would be appreciated.

Obviously, you'd never get your money back and you might as well buy an RS in the first place but I'm just interested.

Danke schon.

This question has been proposed before, and Rubystone put me straight! They are basically different cars to most intents and purposes, as they were built to be different from the floorpan up.

Cost would be very stupid. I wouldn't like to guess, but using Porsche parts I reckon on about 25k... same cost as a s/h RS! Plus the car won't have an RS chassis number, so be worth little more than any other modded C2.

You could probably do an 'R-eSque' conversion on the cheap for about 4-6k, i.e put in sports suspension, engine mods, buckets, door panels and rear bumper centre section. May be enough to fool the man on the street, but Mr Ninemeister would spot the difference at a million feet.

Remember, these cars came with different gearboxes, slightly different engines, different brakes, plus all the lightweight stuff and a seam welded chassis. None are cheap to apply to a standard C2.

Cheers Dom,

Told you it was a stoopid idea.

I'm still interested in what you'd do to perhaps approach RS levels of performance rather than creating an exact RS replica.

Anyone here modded their 964 to this degree ?

Suspension kit (springs/dampers) and chip/exhaust/filter will get you close-ish. Grip will be high, especially if you put 255s on the back, turn in will be OK and performance pretty good. The standard C2 isn't slow. You could even outdrag an RS by getting a 5-6k supercharger conversion with 330-360bhp.

However, the problem is that the RS is more than the sum of its parts. Every part of the car contributes to a pure driving experience, unmatched by subtly modding a normal C2.

Even with a C2 that handles well and goes better, you won't get the RS-ness that you may be after... the unassisted steering writhing in your hand, the razor sharp throttle response, the single mindedness of its purpose...

As I mentioned re someone modding their 993, I would advice sports exhaust, filter and rechip, just to maximise the car's inherent performance. You could also tweak the suspension to make it a bit stiffer and responsive. These mods would probably cost between 1.5-3k all in.

Beyond that, you'll be changing it into something it isn't. Never sensible. Especially when 964RSs are still fairly affordable.

IMHO, the appeal of the RS isn't the grip and the performance (an Evo Lancer will probably beat it on both), but the purity, responsiveness and character of a race-derived Porsche. Accept no substitute, as Tom Cruise once said
