.....on billboards distract motorists!

what were you thinking?

Almost a quarter of British motorists have been so distracted by roadside billboards of semi-naked models that they have veered dangerously out of their lane.

Research claims one in five male drivers said their eyes were diverted from the road by posters of scantily clad women.

However only one in 10 women were put off by the sight of a semi-dressed male model.

"There is a growing body of concern about the lack of any coherent strategy for arranging roadside furniture," said Mark Young, an expert in transport ergonomics from Brunel University.

He said novel advertising could cause a significant risk of distracting drivers at crucial times, such as going round a difficult roundabout.

"In fact, this risk is probably underestimated and we need to do more research on the possibility of excluding non-essential information when the driver is already busy dealing with the road," he said.

The study, by Privilege Insurance, said a five-second distraction at 60mph equated to driving at least the length of a football pitch without fully concentrating.

What about speed cameras (which in turn also forces drivers to look at their speedos)

Which is why you should do all your hazard assessment early, so that you can enjoy the view down the straight.

There was an advert for Layer Cake on the M4 flyover last year.

The day it went up there was serious congestion, and from a personal point of view - yep I looked every time

Yep. We must remove distracting objects from the roadside.

I live in Warrington and this reminds me of a similar 'incident'.

The local council commissioned a local artist and commercial painting team to brighten up the side of a huge (20 storey?) building which I belive used to be a factory or mill so it had no windows on that side so was a perfect canvas. The artist brought to the council a wonderfully designed underwater scene, full of depth and detail. As the side of the building was in full view of a couple of major roads, (thus the reason they wanted to brighten it up) they then made a complete U-turn and decreed that such a design would distract drivers. Their blessing was only granted on the proviso that the artist could only use one single colour with a single small design or motif somewhere on the face of the building.

As a result, the next time the council looked at the building it was bright pink with a motif of an eye with a single tear.

Ironically, it gets noticed even more.
