964 Annual running costs - based on your owning experience

Forgetting engine re-builds, new clutch etc. what do you guys find you are paying on average for your annual maintenance (ideally on a C2) and insurance (i'm 36 with full NCB).

Your insurance should be sub 500 I would think. (and may not need to use your no claims as with mine which I have with Carole Nash).

quite a bit for me

but most of mine is not 'regular' maintainance (i.e. corrosion repairs to the rear scuttle, 4 new tyres etc.)

I guess you should look for £500-£1000 for insurance dependant on where you live & where you keep the car - annual service of £600 ish and allow a contingency fund!

there are some chaps on rennlist who regularly sink £1500 a year on maintainance not on clutchs, top end work etc.

I'm sure you will have been told already, buy well and your risk of having to spend will be significantly reduced....

actually, listen to me spouting bollox - mine was mechanically sound, had had the clutch done recently, top end a couple of years ago and I've still spent the best part of three grand in less than six months!

(and I still haven't got teardrop mirrors )

I don't want to look to closely at my annual expenditure but guess its about £7-8K per year but that's probably not typical. £1500 is probably a reasonable amount to budget for.

I spend £1200 in insurance (but it's covered for commuting etc, rather than a restricted mileage policy), about £300 on tyres (rears last me 8k miles) c. £400 on a service and probably £150 on sundries in the year: total £850.

but we are excluding rebuilds and clutches still - have spent £7k on that this year...

Holy S**t, some of the figures qouted are very scary indeed...is it just the people who spend £1000's that post on forums ?! - surely the vast majority of 964's do not cost this much to keep or is this the reality of 964 ownership.

Maybe a 968CS might be a better choice...hmm

To be fair mines a track car so a lot of that is tyres, discs and pads and clutches. Then there's the crashing which doesn't help and I've modified it a lot as I've gone along.

Mine was about 1300 a year, but never as predictable as that. One service was nearly 3k, but the next year it was 300

I have known 968CSs cost thousands to run... depends if it needs new cams, PAS, water pump, how often it is tracked...

No performance car costs peanuts to run if driven hard. Porsches shrug off the (ab)use better than most, but they are not infallible.

Remember that 'running costs' are almost impossible to calculate car to car and owner to owner. You have to look at what's included (some people include tyres, insurance, upgrades, petrol, fuel even!!!, while others don't). You have to look at how often a car is tracked. How fastidious the owner is. Whether it is a big spend in the first year because the car was initially cheap and needed work doing. It is basically a joke to compare actual figures against each other.

What I will say is that some cars are 'cheap' (say, sub 1k per year maintenance and servicing), 'OK' (say 1-3k) and 'expensive' (3k plus) to run, based generally on likelihood to break down, build and engineering quality and parts/labour prices.

A Nissan Micra is cheap.
No performance car is cheap.
Most Porsches are OK.
A Lotus Carlton or a Lamborghini are expensive.

In my experience, a 968CS and a 964C2 would cost a similar amount to maintain on an annual basis. Roughly 1.5-2k per annum.

I spent £500 / £600 pa average. Had the car nearly three years.

Having said that it did need the dreaded rebuild when I sold it (seller was aware of this). I think the cost of that was going to be £3k so if you get a good car budget £1.5k pa (excluding track use + insurance)??

I use Northways so mines averaged less than £700 pa for maintenance, looked back in history last 6 years its ave is c£1k this includes tyres. Insurance on less than 5k is c£400 over is c£600.
If you are looking for one go for condition, full history cost c17-9k and with all supercars if you can not afford a large bill one day, then dont buy.
My advice is buy a 964 over 968 as its the next level up and you wont regret it.

ps if you had asked the same question on 964titanic,964smartgroups or rennlist you would not have received so many bad news stories, normally its about 10%
