Got a little challenge for the technical bods out there.

I've got an external drive with a USB port on it that I can connect to my PC, which then registers it as an external drive and allows me full access. Basically I use this as a big MP3 store and use it in my car (its a NEO jukebox)

I've also got an iPAQ rz1710 that I want to put sat nav onto and also put in the car. Now the challenge is:

How do I get the ipaq to register and read the external drive? Its got windows media player on it and I can connect that straight into the stereo, and it'd give me more control and information about the music playing. I cant get any sensible answers from HP (now theres a surprise!) but as far as I can figure it, if the Ipaq is supposed to be a "pocket pc" and comes with a USB cable, then it should be able to read the other drive. I cobbled together a USB cable last night, (a type female to b type male) but the ipaq didn't register the drive and the drive didn't register the USB, so either the cable was pants (very possible) or I need some software/drivers/mojo to get the two things to talk to each other. I guess the IPAQ has to send some sort of signal down the USB constantly for the drive to know that something is trying to talk to it?

Has anyone done anything similar to this before??? Or know of somewhere I could get the necessary software if such a thing exists - I tried googling but got nothing useful (or understandable to my non-technical brain) so any help would be much appreciated

Cheers

The problem is likely that the iPaq is no more a "Pocket PC" than I'm Lynford Christie. It doesn't use an x86 processor, and Windows Mobile appears to bear little resemblance to "real" Windows. (Indeed it bears every hallmark of having been cobbled together by a bunch of trainees from all the bits rejected as being too crappy to go into Windows 3.1)

This article (www.glasslantern.com/articles/PocketPCDrives/) implies that what you want to do is possible, but you need a device driver for the iPaq end. That and the USB device on the iPaq is a gadget end, not a host end (you need one of each to be able to talk to each other.)

I have a 5Gb Toshiba PCMCIA hard drive on my iPaq and that works fine, both in Windows Mobile and Familiar Linux.

Thaks for that - I've found a USB 1.1 Host Adapter CF Card, but cant find one for the 1710, so I guess I'm out of luck at the moment
