- says Charles Clarke.

Another Labour MP says that will show that the policy is a success.

WTF?

How will it increase crime?? Why is it we don't get drunkern violence throughout opening hours, rather than just at 11-12 PM when throwout time is? The same amount of people who drink will cause the trouble, regardless of the time closing is...

i think the theory goes, that if gang of youths a is kicked out of the club/pub at 1/2/3am, they will be wandering the streets looking for another pint/kebab/fight/taxi, at the same time as gang of youths B has been kicked out, leading to both A and B looking for all of the above and probably just ending in a mass scrap outside johanna's. whereas if they can keep drinking as long as they like, the need for taxi/pint/'bab etc, will be spread around the clock.

Thats rite!

The 24hr law means the pub or club in question can stay open for 12hrs within the 24hr period wether it be 6am-6pm or 9pm-9am!

What ever time they close the louts will be out and about. This law makes it so that they could be leaving the pub or club at 11am the next day pissed as farts and causin' havoc round town in the day time when the public are awake!

I think it will spead out the public order stuff over a larger time frame so we dont get mullared at 1am etc but it will be more manageable over a longer time frame so we all dont get commited at 1 point in the evening.

Thats what I think, which is why I don't think 24hour laws will make create more crime. the argument that more hours - More crime is way off the mark.

I honestly think that the vast amount of trouble is kicking out time. If all the clubs/bars stagger it, then a lot of problems will dissappear...

The problem is not time, its marketing binge drinking as a product. While magistrates allow all you can drink for x,y z as part of the license then we will continue to have problems.

I've never felt unsafe walking anywhere. I've said it before, but a lot of 'scary' crap that is seeping through the Uk society is a complete over-hype, and blame for that is both at the feet of the media, and the government, and their persistent soundbytes that perpetuate it.

Personal experiance tells me it's not hype mate.

Personal experience tells me it is... Never had car broken into, or stolen, never been burgled, never been mugged, never been randomly attacked, never been non-randomly attacked... neither has any of my family, or friends. Not a jot... there will be cases, obviously you've had something happen to you, but i think the vast majority of people go aboyut their business without having anything happen...

I have had four cars broken into, one three times. One was taken and used in an armed robbery where the criminals escaped for a while, the keys stolen whilst my housemates slept, luckily. I have had attempted muggings twice, carjack once, got chased for my £4k mountain bike once, had numerous 'big boys' pick a fight with me.

You have been VERY lucky, and long may it continue, but that's not the way the world is, especially not the UK. You may see it all as the government scaremongering but live in the real world for a bit and it's almost as bad as they say. Personally, I am not scared of walking anywhere, but that's a result of all the shit I've had, not the safety on the streets.

Oh, and at least 3 females I know have been raped. Over-hype indeed.

yeah... I'd best live in the real world... I've been living in this broom cupboard this last decade. i see what you are saying, and yes there will be peeps who have horror stories, but I've yet to meet one. Maybe you live in a dodgy area, full of scum, and hoodie-wearing scum?
I've lived near birkenhead my whole life, and its not the nicest place on the planet by a long chalk, but still had no problem. we've been hearing about roving groups of hoody wearing yobs... nope.. no problem with those. high crime... erm.. Not experienced any... and so on. Look at it this way. If someone experiences crime say 5 times in their lifetime, is that really a huge figure? Its a tiny minority in reality.
Christ, I don't even know any girl that has had an attempted rape! maybe they are in actual fact ugly, but I am yet to discover this?

Dunno- I think that the same silly w*nkers will get 'even more drunk' than they do already. ATM if it 11 o'clock they are mullured, they go home, as they can't get into the later licenced clubs because they are too drunk already. With 24 hours pubs, they can just stay in there until they lose conciousness if they wish.
Personaly I think it will make things worse for the first few weeks while the novelty is there, then things may get better...

Absolute bollox - I am probably one of those "silly w*nkers" you speak of (you know, the ones who like to go out and actually have fun), and yes, I get absolutely leathered, but there is a limit to how much someone can drink, and I'm already at that limit now - pubs being open even later will make absolutey no difference to me, or just about anyone else for that matter.

I have been wondering about this. Just because the pubs are open longer does not seem to me to mean a) your capacity to drink more is increased and/or b) you have the financial means to go on drinking ad infinitum. However, a foul mouthed gunty ladette on a night out probably drinks more than I do in a month, so I am possibly not that well informed on this subject

Radio 4 this morning said that only 350 establishments over the whole country have applied for 24-hour licenses. Considering that the word "establishment" covers pubs, clubs, garages and supermarkets, I would bet that the vast majority of these applications are just from 24-hour supermarkets who find shutting the booze aisle ridiculous.

So can we stop going on about pubs being open 24 hours a day? It simply isn't going to happen.

No, criminals are responsible for crime, and if there is an increase they will still be responsible for it. Why must we go on excusing peoples behaviour because they are drunk.
