I find that going onto eBay and searching completed listings is usually a pretty good indication of true market value.

Unfortunately that means our 2 year-old £2000 VAIO is now worth around £300.

There are a number of places selling used laptops and the values there are pretty high..

I payed £200 privately (probably 12 months ago now though) for a Vaio PIII 650Mhz, 64MB ram. But it did have DVD and a 15" TFT which is nice.. and also is very solidy built. I probably could have got something more poorly made and higher spec, but laptops are dodgy/breakable enough as it is..

When I used to be more involved with pcs the rule of thumb was 70% a year depreciation, and a 3 year old pc was pretty much scrap...

Well the point of my question is that my Father in law wants to buy it, I thought £400 would be reasonable and he thinks it's worth more

Obviously that's one person you don't rip off
