Serious question - just trying to get some facts and perspective.

My son was born in the USA just over a week ago and whilst going through the vast array of questions was asked 2 questions:-
1) Did we want a Hepititis B jab?
2) Did we want our child circumcised?

As it seems that records of Hepititis B jabs being given will be required to get admission into a school in the future we did opt for that; however I saw no medical reason to have a circumcision done, plus no religious reason either as I'm not Jewish and neither is my wife, so that was not going to happen.

We were then asked the exact questions in our Paediatrician's office (they are less specialised in the US than British Paediatricians, more like GPs who only see kids).

I'd just like to know if they are asking the same questions in British hospitals and if so what are the percentage take rates for the jab and circumcision?

I believe that most america (men) are circumsised, whatever their religion... Is not done in the uk (or even offered) in the NHS. Only done for a medical or religous reason.

Too much information alert......

I wish my parents had done the above when I was a baby as it would have saved a painful operation whan I was eight (and the complications due to infection caught in a crappy hospital) and would have prevented the scars. I am not Jewish either though I do support Spurs

A friend of mine spent most of her life in the US before coming here a few years back. She hadnt met a willy that hadnt been circumnavigated until she got here.
I think its a US thing regardless of religious beliefs

My son was born in a UK hospital in 2003 and we not asked either of those questions. I will check with the wife but I don't think kids here are even offered the Hep B jab when they go for the Polio, tetanus and MMR jabs.

You tend to find that anyone who works in a hospital has a Hep B jab. Also Prison Officers, Police, Paramedics etc.. Apart from that AFAIK it's only gays and lesbians that have Hep B jabs as they are more at risk....

....although if I'm wrong someone feel free to come along and correct me

Isn't Hep B the one they give as some sort of defence against meningitis? or is that Hep C?

I lose the plot with all these jabs, my 2 were born pre 2000 (95 and 97), and I have just sent them for whatever jabs the doc wanted to give them, but I do know there was a big thing about vaccinating against meningitis cos it tends to run rife through schools.

Is that some kind of promotion? Ive never heard of anyone get penile cancer, so i assume its not that common. Considering circumcision reduces sensitivity, i'd much rather risk the million-to-one chance of penile cancer

It is also an Australian thing to stop boys catching diseases from not washing their bits properly.

I think we need a "slightly disgusting threads" department, this week we've had anal bleaching to add to the pot, where will it end.

I conclude then that Americans don't wash? which is whay they asked in the first place
