Shorter gear stick

I want to shorten the gear lever on my S3 as it seems rather high in comparison with others - has anyone done this and can you give me any advice on how you tackled it - as in what size tap required etc.

Why is it higher? Is it just you havent screwed your nob as far as it can go, or is it the hole is not deep enough? Lol and I started typing with no intention of it sounding like that.

If you dont want to get rid of your current nob then cut it down being very careful where the swarf goes.
You may not need to re-tap if you dont cut much off.

If you have the original Ford knob then it is quite a long knob [dammm lost that one then] , if you unscrew the knob you'll see that the shaft only goes a little way into the bottom of the knob.

Get yourself a replacement ball shaped knob and I think you'll find that it is quite a bit lower down and falls nicely into your hand

e mail Karl under his pistonheads handle of billet boy..... make sure you tell him it is for a v6 / v8 * delete as appropriate as the thread is a different size!!!

Some knobs don't need to be threaded - mine is a Richbrook and sits over the stick and is held with grubscrews - so I suppose you could cut the thread (or more) off the stick and leave a very short stubby knob if you wanted to...

I cut mine down and fitted a momo gear knob, they have grub screws so don't need the threaded part. It is alot easier to change gear as you can keep your elbow on the centre console

I had a richbrook one on my M Series with a grub screw arrangement however it was forever coming loose - ok go on then my knob kept falling off !!!!!!!
