My daughters School have told her she has to do 5 as levels to attend this school,
she is now finding this to be too much work and wants to drop a subject, when we enquired we were told that if she did this she would have to leave school surely this can't be right,

we contacted the local LEA and they said speak to the head and get back to us ,

i can't believe a school could do this and force you to take more exams than you wish or are capable off ,i would rather she got 3 good grades than 5 naff ones

Is their central funding based on their results?

If so, that would perhaps explain this complete and utter lunacy.

The NHS and the Police have been marginalised with targets, to do it to education as well, just, well, saddens me.

Tough on lunacy, tough on the causes of lunacy...

Dont they work on an As level being half an A level.

Some places ask that you do several in the 1st year then focus on 3 to be A levels.

Dunno long time since I had anything to do with that lark but with 5 As Levels that should be the same work load as 2.5 A'levels.

Of course i could have this all wrong and as for dropping your daughter for not having the right number I would suggest to the head that she will focus on the 4 (or what ever she wants to) and will just turn up for the other.

This will no doubt affect the rating of the establishment so they might re-consider this "rule".

My school was the same I took 3 AS levels that I was interested in. 1 that I was slightly interested in and 1 that i didnt care about at all (dubbed the filler). I concentrated on my three main ones done some work on the middle one and no work on the filler. Like you I would rather have 3 good grades than 5 ok ones.

At my 6th form college, we were all made to do general studies becase the college knew most people would pass and it would increase the college's UCAS points average and pass rate for courses. One thing we ended up finding out after someone kicked up a fuss about their result was all the papers were read through before they were sent for marking, and any candidates deemed not likely to pass were withdrawn from the course rather than them being recorded as fails had their papers been marked.

Its been going on for years. They get paid by the number of subjects. Its the only way to keep the poorly head teachers in a job. Your child does not of course have to make any effort at the surplus subject. Surely this is the same as dropping it.
