Bloody chkdsk. The bosses PC threw a spassy fit as there are a few bad blocks on the disk. Booted to the recovery console to run chkdsk. Oh no sir, it's completely shafted sir, there's nothing you can do whatsoever in any way sir

Ho hum, time for trick no2, slave it off my system. Autocheck kicks in. Ah, looks like a few probs with the old MFT Guv. Give me a moment sir..... There you go, good as new and I've mapped out the bad sectors for you.

Why the flippin hell is the command line version of chkdsk so pants? An inexperienced user would have just formatted a perfectly recoverable disk for no good reason.

What I want to know is why the switch to fix is different between the standard shell and the recovery console version.

I smashed my head against that for a good hour before realising.

Ballmer, what starts with come here and ends in ouch?

Are they? I'll watch out for that.

TBH I usually run it with a slash question mark anyway. It seems the RC version only has limited capabilities, which is a bit of an arse. Good job I had a spare machine handy to run it off, would have been a right pain at home

Dunno... is a PITA though. Wonder if it could be the fact that the command line version was written a while ago...?

Could be. It's a bit rubbish at sorting NTFS out for sure

We seem to be going through a phase of Maxtor drives killing themselves at the moment... ... so we seem to be spending a fair bit of time with good old CHKDSK

Try CHKDSK C: /R - it'll recheck the HDD for bad sectors.

Done, that's the one that said 'No way, not ever sir' I rarely bother with the RC for file corruption these days, it rarely works and slaving is almost as quick.
