Here's a quick review of the 1st Lotus/Car Limits course I went to today:

I arrived at North Weald airfield on a cold, overcast day to meet our instructor Andrew and 2 other "learners": Scott (911 Carrera Convertible) and Lotus Elise driver John (I think - sorry, I'm terrible with names!)...

To start off with, Andrew took each of us out in turn to assess our current driving style/standard. He then introduced a new technique/exercise to each of us during the day teaching different aspects of control and car behaviour (rotational steering, understeer, oversteer, lift-off oversteer etc). While 1 person was being taught, the other 2 were free to practise what we were learning. We did various exercises on "the corner" and and then progressed to "the circuit" in the afternoon.

During the afternoon, we all went against the clock around the circuit and then Andrew showed us what our cars were really capable of... He drove 1 lap to set the fastest time and then 1 lap to demonstrate how not to do it! I was stunned by his driving ability and control in cars he was jumping into for the first time! We also passengered with each other to see our differing techniques on the circuit.

I can honestly say I've never had as much fun in my car, despite having been on a few track and airfield days. Andrew's demonstrations were stunning in all of the cars and the level of tuition was outstanding. I've come away from the training day feeling a lot more confident in the car's ability and feel I have learnt a lot about various handling characteristics. I just wish I could spend more time practising and honing these skills - a day goes all too quickly!

I strongly recommend the Car Limits course to any driver who wants to go that step further and learn more about both their car and their own abilities.

There may be some videos/piccies up soon...

A 4 person day is only £105 each which is a bargain compared to some track and airfield days... If you choose a 2 person day, then it's £205 each.

These are the prices for North Weald... I think there are some other venues available. For further info, check out the web site: www.carlimits.com

I went on one of his courses in my Chimaera at Crail, near St Andrews (£80 per person)
I would also recommend it to anyone - one thing I would say is don't bother going with new tyres on the car, as they are going to be pretty trashed by the end of the day
