My everyday car is an Audi 80 B4 which is still driving but I want to get rid off it because it has covered 160.000 miles and will cost me a lot to service if I keep it. The car has several ditches, one or two from me, but most done by some numpty. In short, I don't want to keep it. Instead, I'm looking for a cheap alternative with aircon and a large boot, possibly an oil burner (mile eater), etc... you know. I do large miles per year, about 20.000. I came across the current Ford Mondeo and wonder if anyone of you on PH has one. What is the car like, what is the service like, is the guarantee worth it ? My brother once drove a lease Mondeo and found it "good". What's your comment ? I expect your answers on a postcard... thanks.

Got a few Zetecs and TDCIs in my firm's fleet ( I work for a hire co.). A pleasure to drive, I'd choose one over the Passat/Vectra/Laguna/Avensis/Primera alternatives every time.

Very competent cars, and we never have any trouble with them, despite the amount of abuse they must get.

I've also driven our firms fleet Mondeo. Only the base model but I was well impressed with it. Really quiet, excellent ride quality.

Nicely ballanced, good torque but little in the way of top end. I was really impressed with the handling, since I had to drive over twisty mountain roads I couldnt help myself
This one had shte tyres though as any corner I'd go into a little hot it would squeal like a btch.
After that drive I'm very keen on a ST version, they've got very nice leather seats and look top notch on the factory alloys.

The boot's quite good for space, real long and deep despite it looking really small from the outside.
Only 2 quams with it, not enough power (it was the base model) and the funny dash covering stuff. It'll be an absolute btch to clean esp dust.

Those are just my impressions over a couple of drives.

My Dad's had one as a company car. Its cr*p.

His gearbox has collapsed twice (in under a year!) and Ford have been unable to rectify its numerous gremlins.

These include;

Refusing to start 1st time,
Stupidly high idle speed,
Dead syncromesh,
Sudden flatspots whilst accelerating,
Boot which only shuts after 3 attempts.

Despite all this it is a really nice car to drive (and its the estate!), so unhelpful as this may be, I recommend you get a good one.

Don't take anything that's had a bump, as Ford are (by their own admission) unable to restore them to full glory once a single thing has gone wrong.

It's just too expensive to replace everything, hence Dad's problems (he hit a large stone on a country road, sump needed replacing, car never worked right since).

Sorry if that reads really poor, I'm V V drunk.

We've got a TDCi 130PS version on our fleet and it pulls like a train and returns about 45mpg on a tank, pleasant to be in, boring to look at. Given a free hand go for the Zetec S TDCi - it gets the 18in alloys and body kit etc.

Good cars... surprised by Dancing's problems... most people beleive them to be decent, honest, if slightly mundane cars. Good at eating the miles and the TDCi's are great motorway mile munchers.

Then again, I am slightly biased...

Take one for a drive though, I'm sure you'll find it more involving than the competition.

TDCi gets my vote, as previously mentioned you can have a wee bit of fun and still put in mpg of over 40. When you get paid per mile like me it can mean you're actually making money whilst having fun

Thanks for the comments so far. I go shopping now, there are quite a few on the German market.

Problem with the TDCi is first gear is to tall - a bit of a bitch to pull off smoothly, but other than that there great - 2.0 Zetec is good fun to drive though..

Any more ? The TDCi engined cars are a bit above my budget. What's the difference to the normal oil burner ?

The normal oil burner is a right bucket of bolts apparently - makes a transit look like a Maybach.... IIRC...

try looking at the citroen xantia , not as unreliable as everybody makes out and comes with one of the best diesel engines and is cheap to buy go drive one they are well worth looking at , my mum had one for 4 years and other than routine servicing nothing fell off or broke plus the interior feels more solid and better put together than the mundaneo

Unless you know it's on it's way out keep the Audi 80, it'll be a damn site more reliable than most of the other car out on the road. Mine's done over 170K and still going strong, I know 80's that have done well over the 200K mark and never let the owners down.

My 2p!
