Hi, Noob checking in.
Im looking at buying one....never owned a porsche but have hired one and am now hooked. Im interested in any running cost information anyone can give me...servicing..any big bad things that go on them...anything really would be really really helpful. I want to judge what the running costs are like as its the only thing thats stopping me at the moment.

Hi Lemac, welcome 
One thing to watch out for is problems with the "Rear Main Seal" (RMS) leaking oil. You can search this forum for info on that, or Google. Also, the engines do have some history of letting go. From what I've read, they should be good for 80k miles at least.
The best thing you can do is, before buying Boxster, is take it to a Porsche dealership where they will do a 111-point inspection on the car. They cost around £150-200, and it's pretty in-depth. Mine came back with "slight scuff on passenger rear seat pocket" You can then warranty the car for 12 months for around £700. Potentially worth every penny if something did go wrong.
There's loads more info, which I'm sure others will impart.

My first Porker was a Boxster (2.7) and I always found running costs to be pretty acceptable.
Insurance - £750, me 32 wife 27 (at the time)
Servicing - £250-£350 pa
Tyres - they eat rears, budget £120-£150 ea every 8,000 miles if driven 'enthusiastically'.
A mate had a 2.5 that needed a new rear screen (they crack and fog particularly if not folded properly when cold), think that cost him £300 but it is now possible to retrofit the later glass screen.
Mine was new so not really any other maintenance costs - obviously on a 2.5 there may be a bit more to spend to keep her in decent nick. Even if buying privately there are comapnies that will let you purchase a warranty, maybe not as comprehensive as the OPC one but so long as it covers RMS worth having (I've just paid £500 ish for a year warranty on a 996).
Some fantastic deals on the 2.5 now - I've seen a few RHD for £12K ish, high miles obviously but buy on condition and history.

I had a s reg 2.5 for four years. I found the running costs reasonable. Insurance also was only about £700 (london postcode). OPC costs were a bit stiff towards the end, so took it to JZ Machtech. Get an inspection, my 48,000 mile service + few wear and tear items was £1500 even at JZ!
imo, i would seriously try and stretch to a 2.7, i had one for a month as a courtesy car, engine was so much more refined (and powerful). Also, make sure it has the lux pack, mine didnt and it was difficult to shift when i came to sell.
