wiring problems

With the increasing inclement weather and being one of those who uses his car every day for 25 miles each way thought it was time to sort out the front fog lights that haven't work since I have had the car.
So into the garage Steve Heath book in hand wiring diagrams look simple (originally qualified as an aircraft engineer so this will be simple).
Look behind centre console no wires in the switch. Even easier than I thought plug must have come out, remove console, no plug. Back to book defiantly shows one, this is a TVR though so trace wire from light to fuse box and relay tray. The book says the fuse box is behind the glove box but its not its above the ECU. Is this normal if so does anyone have a diagram of which fuse is which and which relay is which. Anyway trace wires and find that light should come on with main beam. So back to basics check for power and earth at lights fix new earth, lights work. But why is the switch there if they are wired as driving lights does it just fill a hole from earlier cars.
Is the switch the mod or the wiring
Another question for the weekend in the garage is it normal for the headlights to come up when only side lights are switched on. If not has anyone had this problem before?

The lower front lights are driving lights, not fog lights, and as such must only be wired to activate when main beam is selected. The switch on the panel must be for the rear fogs, but I don't understand why there is no plug. TVR did change the wiring at some point (lighting reg. change?) so that the headlamps come up when only sidelights selected. Seems a bit pointless, so I modded mine so they stay down on sides only - got to be worth a good 10MPH
and also wired the driving lights on a independent switch. 7.
Sorted mine 2 weeks ago ('87 350i)
They are not fog lights, but driving lights
(despite what the switch says).
If you put your main beam headlights on (lights on, pods in the raised position, indicatior switch forward) and then the so labelled fog light switch toggles the driving lights on / off and the switch illuminates accordingly.
Mine was a loose diode poking into the side of a relay (there are 2 concerned and the Steve Heath bible explains them) plenty of WD40 and a bit of a wiggle on the diode sorted them.
Side lights do not put the pods in the upright position, only when headlights are on full do the light pods raise.
Now when I pull the indicator switch back to flash someone (like when you pass a fellow wedger), the lamp pods do not raise but the driving lights do the flashing.
The Bible wiring diagram was really useful after I had understood the colour code (its the same as Triumph used on Spitfires):
B=Black
G=Green
K=Pink
FG=Light Green
N=Brown
O=Orange
P=Purple
S=Slate
U=Blue
W=White
Y=Yellow
R=Red
Hope you get them sorted.

Ok, on my late '88 car, the pods raise with sidelights on.

My Rover's headlights come on slightly when sidelights are on.
A pity some dimwits don't use ANY lights in the lousy weather this past week.
Wouldn't you like to give some people a good slap....blinding rear fogs on in rain, or storming up behind you in the outside lane in thick spray, with no bloody lights at all !
One day a 40 tonner will pull out while they're alongside.

Mind you I drove from Reading to Teeside the other night and by the time I got to Leeds it would have seemed that my lights weren't on either, stopped and had to wipe so much crud of them. Managed to see again and settle back to Warp 9 for the rest of the journey
