To buy or not to buy 3200 GT
Discussion
6 months of indecision, 993 or Maserati. The 911 reliable fast etc but for a good S version its between 30 and 40 grand. It seems the Maser is much more car for the money and is absolutely beautiful. 25 to 30 grand seems to get a very nice 25k car with service history. From reading previous posts it is better to get the 2000/2001 models and there is no way I would go for the newer version due to the rear lights!
So what do i look out for? It has to be manual and I am in the North West, so who to see for servicing etc. Also are they easy to sell on afterwards, it seems like the 911 is like rocking horse poo. There is a 2000 model at sytners in Nottingham which my brother is going to see - anybody know of this car?

Hi, Ive had my 2000 model since six months old and cant think of anything on the market that I'd rather have. (except a MC12 and a lottery win) I've had no real troubles and done approx 30k.
As with any car look for the the care and consideration it has recieved. dealer service etc.
And yes the new style rear lights are pooh!

6 months of indecision - par for the course – mine was that and then some..
I was all for a 3200, for me an Auto (and yes, I too loved the lights), the deep bellow of the exhaust, the rarity of the marque, and so many more reasons. I found the GTA lovely to drive. Somehow, despite months of looking, I couldn’t find the right example for me. So, decided to extend my search to slightly newer coupe cambiocorsa models. Glad I did, I found the car for me. I guess I just wanted to say if you haven’t tried one, and your budget allows, don’t dismiss the 4200 just because of the rear lights – try one. The 4.2 engine is unbelievable, it sounds awesome (even without a Tubi), and IMHO the F1 paddleshift is great. Two months into my ownership, I can advise you that every drive in a Maserati is truly an event (I look forward to every time like a bigkid)
Anyway, to my real point, among other ‘contenders’, I tried a 993 C4, and found it to be an extremely enjoyable drive, but it just hasn’t got the presence of a Maserati. Be under no illusion. Within minutes of joining a dual carriageway, a ‘nutter’ (happened to be in a 3 series) was right up my arse – because I was driving a Porsche. I have never had that with the Maser. A point you might want to consider.
I just wanted to share my opinion
Good luck and get a Maserati

Read up on Mr Tonys threads about buyers guides etc.
DO buy the maser, I'm on my second
first had a 3200 for 2 years now a 4200 spyder inc tubi (and have only done 8 journeys with the roof up!).
Think about it this way - you can buy a porker anytime in your life, but how ofter will the chance to buy a maser be around? The difficulty comes when you have to change the maser, what do you go for next ! (gransport spyder next for me
)

993 is a great car, and the best 911 I think.
3200 is a car you buy with your heart not your head and therefore more rewarding I think. However, being realistic, it will be more expensive to run than the Porsche, doesn't go round corners as well.
If you like to drive a car that people like to point at (in a good way) then get the Mazzer.

buy the Maserati, you'll stand out. 911s are great cars but they are scarcely head turners any more.
I can't shut people up about my Maser (David A's old motor) they just keep going on and on about it - they are beginning to bore me now!

Factor in the cost of a warranty, be aware of service costs, and then find yourself a damn good (and ideally cheap) specialists for those little jobs that fall outside the warranty and you should have a grand time.
And you can get 25mpg if you drive carefully and prudently (but you won't).
Hi Guys,
I service and repair Maserati's in kent, as a specialist. I have the Maserati dealer tool for the 3200 gt's. If you want to get some advice you can always call me on 01732 363030.
I have seen so many cars now i can help with the items to look for.
The rear lights are cool on a 3200gt.

I agree with most of the replies.
I had a 3200 in yellow for a year, I had some warranty issues (do buy one with a v good warranty as it can be expensive ). The rear withbones are prone to failure.
Having said that, the car is fantastic as a Grand tourer and can properly hold 4 people.
This car was build for people who like to be looked at in there car.
This was from young/old /male/female, especially female as it is just such a good looking car, and many people do not know what it is.
I only swapped the car for a F355 as the handling on a track is V restricted, I wish I could own both, as they are for very different purposes. The massa can be an everyday car.
The 3200 is the only way to go for the rear lights and the front vents, Best of luck in your hunt/decision

Depending on the Dealer and warranty. Go for it !
Its an amazing car and every journey is an experience. What a stunning car!
Just make sure you set funds aside to service the car correctly and if out of warranty use a specialist.
Beware of the costs of Actuators and Shocks! (My own experience)
And Avoid a New Forest Dealer.(again Just my experience)
What they did to my car was unbelieveable to say the least !
I had to threaten county court action to resolve the problem! Only then was it fixed !
Total W
s!
Needless to say my Gransport order has been swapped to another Dealer.
Please feel free to email me for my experience on the 3200GT.
Granted not all customers have been treated like this but the point is... Be %100 sure about who you buy the car from and AVOID Trident Warranties - They are a JOKE! For £1,500 for a year they should be ashamed of themselves. Never again!
I would not want this to happen to another customer.Hence my Passionate post.
The 3200 is a wonderful car and when the Turbo's cut in ...well what more can I say !
My only problem is that the new models do not have the Boomerang lights.
I am told its around £8,000 to change the lights to the 3200 version !
Ouch !
The 3200 is a great car and stunning to look at !
I miss my 3200 gt in some ways but not in the way it was repaired by a main dealer!
If you have set you heart on the 3200 then go for it but be aware that if it does go wrong then make sure you set aside a few grand over the comming year to cover costs even with a warranty.
Granted some people on here have had very few problems but be aware.....
If the 3200 goes wrong you will need some cash in reserve to keep her in perfect nick.
Final advice is get an Indi and forget the £89.50 + vat from main dealers .
You can half this with a good Indi .
Hope this is of Help ?

Still looking,
Out of the country at the mo, but the internet brought up an Assetto Corsa 2001 for 28,000 private. Thoughts please. As for the warranty how does it work if private? Also one has tickled me at Graypaul in Nottingham, not local to Manchester area, so this is putting me off as I would have to travel do Nottingham for repairs? or would I, is the overall warranty couvered by Maserati and not the dealer?
I am back in the Uk over Christmas so a few test drives will be taken - still have the 993 niggle though and they may be easier to sell on afterwards.... but not half the experience

I'm finding that low mileage 3200GT's are beginning to suffer the not used enough syndrome - what a waste of a beautiful car.Rear silencers are dreadful because the bottoms rot out or they split, so i fit Larini rear silencers for the price of originals and what a sound! Not as loud as Tubi's, which i personally think is nicer, and they come with a lifetime warranty. Why bother with the originals is a mystery to me.

IF theres a warranty on the car you buy privately speak to to warranty company / dealer who provided it and they will transfer it into your name if required. The car should be covered.

You can go to any Maserati dealer for warranty work / servicing etc. Wouldn't mention this when you buy as the dealers might just be easier on price if they know the car is theirs to service.

Do some good research on your warranty, this could be a very important money-saving venture should something go wrong with your Maser.
Consult the dealerships over which companies pay out and which argue the toss, and speak to the specialists too if you can - they fix Masers aswell of course. Find out exactly what you are covered for, and what the maximum payout is. If you are paying top whack then there should be no grey areas.
I've just changed warranty company through and on the advice of an Alfa/Maserati specialist local to me - £871 for a policy which they regard as the best in terms of repair pay-outs. From what I have learnt through conversations with dealerships and specialists, price does not seem to bear much relation to quality of policy.
