Just found out the very sad news that Richard Burns has lost his fight with his long term illness and has passed away.

Our thoughts go out to his friends and family,

Likewise, I wasn't aware that he was ill.
My condolences to his family and friends.

I can't believe that this is true - but since the Times Online states it, I guess it must be. I thought he was on the long road to recovery. That is very sad news indeed

I'm gutted by this news...

WRC hasn't been the same since Burns took ill and McRae lost his drive. Whilst lacking some of the charisma that McRae displayed with his all or nothing charges, Burns drove with his head playing the percentages, but when asked could "maximum attack" with the best of them. He was a worthy and well respected world champion. He will be sadly missed.

I'm Shocked and stunned, the guy was only a bit older than me. I was only thinking a short while ago that it's been a while since we'd heard some news of his recovery and now this.

A fine driver, a worthy world champion and most important of all, a decent bloke. Rest in peace, Richard.

Likewise, I'd made the assumption that he was on the road to recovery, and was stunned when the news article this morning that started "Richard Burns..." then went on to tell of untimely death at the age of 34.

Very very sad news!

I was at the last round of the Touring Cars in about 1999 at Silverstone - Richard was doing a demo after the racing had finished and as all the security staff had cleared off I managed to get on the pit wall. Richard came down the start finish straight in an Evo, performed three perfectly executed donuts right in front of me and shot off in the other direction, the back of a car was no more than a yard from the pit wall and his car control was outstanding, even in the smoke!

Just like most people I thought he was getting better and his loss is a real tragedy for British Rallying - he was and always will be one of the greats

Tradgedy... I just turned on sky news and they were talking about him, so I feared the worst. At the end of the feature they confirmed he'd passed away.

The sports world has lost a true hero..

RIP Burnsy

I was shocked... no previous mention on the news... and so young!

And it wasn't down to something moronic like alcoholism...

We saw him at the Peugeot Sport awards last year and allthough he didn't look good at all we thought that there was some hope of a recovery, what an ovation he got that night. Worthy Champion, Top bloke. Thoughts to his family and friends
