Finally got my desktop and laptop on the internet via wireless router.

However, I cant use them together. As soon as I fire up the laptop (win 98) whilst on the desktop (XP) I get a conflicting IP address message and the desktop loses connection. I guess I have to assign an IP address to each device?

Any pointers for a networking novice?!

Set them all to automatically acquire an address from the router (DHCP). Bingo.

Ideally, enable DHCP on the router and configure TCP/IP on both PCs to obtain an IP address using DHCP (this is the option called 'obtain an address automatically' on the TCP/IP bindings for your wireless adapter. If you can't do that for some reason then manually configure each PC with a unique IP address in the same subnet as the router.

Check on your Router that you are issuing an IP range of more than 1 address (also that it is actually has DHCP enabled).

Good Luck

I've had problems with my el cheapo router giving out the same IP to two machines. Solution was to fix the IP on my desktop and let wireless devices get dynamic ones.
