All,

I fitted a new dizzy Cap (Blue) - the old one was black.

Ever since the car runs hot - my local indy says the timing is around 5 degrees different between cap - so checking/adjusting the timing is needed.

Simple I thought - bought a nice new induction strobe.. got the old 360 degree crank template and thought all I need to do is to mark
8 degrees and 32 degrees on the crank.

My assumption is that zero and eight would be there already and maybe even a static marker to time against.. wrong : can't find any of they.

I had a good look with the engine off - loads in the way like bonnet and air con comressor and also with engine running with strobe but no sign of any marks..

I suppose the obvious answer is to remove bonnet, plugs and find TDC, rotor arm pointing to no 1 and mark it up properly and have a good look for the static timing mark (or create one)..

Where should the marks be - front pully or back part .. where is the static timing mark.. ?

On mine, its faintly impressed into the "side/edge" of the pulley. Its not a notch cut out of the edge, but a proper scale ranging from from -10 to +10 degrees. I think its on the wider bit of the pulley, just "behind" the belt. When timed correctly, the numbers can be seen by looking from the right hand side of the engine bay.

Perhaps surface corrosion is hiding them a little.

Like he says, the marks are faint and on the pulley sides. I'd make your own marks then they will be right. Find tdc and mark the pulley then wind engine back 10 degrees and mark again. Anywhere in between should be pretty correct for your engine.

On mine (pre-serp) there's a metal finger attached to the front cover at about 10 o'clock looking from the front. The crank pulley has degree marks scribed onto the outer face. They like as if they are all original RR parts, but I guess it's possible the engine builder added the timing marks. Anyway, on mine the marks seem to be about six degrees out from 'true' TDC. I guess the outer part of the crank damper has shifted somehow relative to the crank?

That sounds a bit strange, unless the plug locators are ofset to the original cap ?

As for timing, apparantly I was told by TVR when I had an issue with fitting my Chim 4.5 BV there is no set timing for it ? The only way we could eventually get it right was with a co type meter to check that she was not running too rich or to lean, in the end we had to set it too rich to run correctly, although the mot emissions were too high. Kind old mot'r marked dist for me , adjusted to pass mot and said adjust as you like when you get home

Buy a black cap

IIRC it's not unheard of for the timing marks to be in the wrong place anyway... I presume that would have to mean the keyway in either the crank or the pulley being machined incorrectly.

As the computer system has now arrived, and all MOT's are now done "live" online, the Ministry can now be sat outside your local MOT centre with their laptop "online" and catch you "at it" I'm afraid.

My best mate owns an MOT testing centre and was demonstrating and explaining to me last month, sad but unfortunately true
