Black Out

Driving home this evening on the A38 towards Plymouth just passing Ivybridge suddenly very dark, lost all lights even the hazards, managed to make it to the grass verge using my indicators on flash beam. Everthing gone that works from the main light switch and the hazards. Callled the breakdown service who rung back to say it would be at least 2 hours because the A30 was closed, told the Gent that was Friday night and I was 30 miles at least from the A30, 1 hour later breakdown truck arrives on fog lights his headlights had failed also entering the Ivybridge Triangle! I tell him that all the goodies are in the footwell on the passngers side, he still insists on looking under the Bonnet. He then digs out all the wiring on top of the amp and battery, fiddling with the different wires and suddenly hazards start and everthing else is back on line. Escorts me home 5 miles down the road no problems, if he reads this many thanks again. Think this could be a fault with the wiring from the hazards and the light switch. Anybody else experienced something like this?

Yeap while fitting a Sat Nav unit - I went out to test it and on the way home it was getting dark, switched on the lights and ..... Nothing!
There are ribbon connectors that go to the back of the light switch, fog light switch and hazards (rotary knob version on later cars which I guess yours is) Its very easy to dislodge these or for them to play up.
If you take the stereo and cage out there are four screws that hold the veneer panel on. Once off you can clean and reseat the contacts on the ribbon cables.
