Hmmmm. So to successfully shaft the chancellor all you have to do is either drive a milkfloat or obtain yourself a car which burns hydrogen.

Some while back I remember seeing (on the web somewhere) an AC Cobra that ran on hydrogen. Now imagine that as your company car

The next logical step is to tax people for breathing.

Or get a vehicle that the Inland Revenue recognises as a 'commercial'. Under current rules, this vehicle qualifies

I'm giving serious consideration to chopping my 328Ci in for one of these, as my personal tax liability would drop from £11620 to £500!! Somehow, I fear this loophole will soon be closed.

If I can save £92 a week in tax by changing to one, I couldn't care less what people called me

Edited to add: If tolls come into force on roads within a 50 miles radius of London (see other thread) then hooning into work off-road across the fields may save another £1000 a year

Is that why you're asking about TVR dealers in Essex??

Err, no, that's the point of a company vehicle. My company run it as part of my 'perks' package. This thread is about how much tax company car drivers pay for this particular perk.

>>edited to add: and you can reclaim the VAT on the basic price as well, which you can't do for company cars.

Termi, sorry, thought you paid for your own fuel like me. Never having been a rep or similar, I wouldn't know the score there.

Here's a loophole they've no way out of: If you run a classic car (ie, over 15 years old), you're liable to pay less in company car tax. Aparrently, under this, a TVR Tasmin from 1983 is cheaper to tax than a modern Mondeo. Just read the July 2002 edition of 'Classic and Sports Car' for more details.

if they are serious about saving the environment maybe they should tax parents for having more than 1 child. its not like we're a dying species. and more children = more resources are used = more pollution. tax credits for people who DONT have children I say.

that should get some people going

No matter what you do the chancellor will take the cash off you. If not on the car, then the income tax, the N I, tuition fees for university, the beer the fags, the private medical cover and then your home to pay for the care you paid for all your life and finally 40% death duties as well as vat on the funeral. And all this to pay for everything for others who won''t get off their arse and do a job. I don't mind paying my way but I do mind paying for others who won't. One example, a friend sold a car to a family of Albainians, they paid for it on a DSS cheque, to enable them to drive to find work! I had to walk and bus it when I had no job. GRR

Just to vaguely reffer to the topic...

Apparently there's enough fuel in each of a Jumbo's tanks to get an american car around the world.

Even if thats a wild exageration- say its been doubled- take into account how many of those things there are.

Then times it by the number of flights per year.

Then consider that you don't fit a catayltic converter to a 747.

Then consider that its fuel is being burnt right up there where it does the damage.

So is the motorist causing global warming? Should the Rt Hon taxman be hitting us this hard, and letting the airlines off (pretty much) scot-free?

I bet you their fuel isn't taxed at 5 times what it costs!

*Petrol stations are currently selling fuel for 10-14p/litre, gov takes the rest.

I see you managed to completely miss the 'L' there and ended up hitting the wrong key. And you have no children, you say?

No, I just wondered if those two things are related, i.e. you're having trouble hitting the right target in more ways than one?

Oh never mind, I'm sure someone got it.
