no warm air from heater
Discussion
Hi,
I have a 4 litre pre-cat Griff and a couple of years ago I found the heater motor that switches air from warm to cold on the heater had packed up. Rather than spend around £400 on a new motor Fernies showed me how to move the heater actuator by hand in the pax footwell to the warm air position for winter and cold air for summer.
Now that winter is here I selected the warm air position at the weekend and went for a drive. Unfortunately there now doesn't seem to be any difference between the cold and warm air positions - both are pretty cool. This definately isn't an airlock because the water temp stayed steady during a whole afternoon driving.
What could cause this - could the heater matrix be blocked or furred up or something?
Grateful for any helpful suggestions. I know that Griffs aren't exactly renowned for their heating but this is pathetic!!
Many thanks,Saxon

Hi Saxon,
Unusual, as most Griff owners bake! There is lot's on here about heater problems and I am sure that a quick search will reveal the solution.
However, one thing to try, will be the valve in the passenger footwell, next to the glove box, that controls the air/water flow. Stick your head in and you should be able to see and hear the valve motor tourning whilst you adjust the temp control on your dash!
I just had the motor/valve replaced due to cooking in the summer. Works fine now.

out of interest how much was your heater valve and motor replacement
The replacements are around £60 quid and come as 1 complete assembly i.e. motor and valve. I was very reluctant to pay out for one as the valve itself looks very fragile so I'm trying to find an alternative. They're actually not that difficult to remove, it's just made awkward by the location.

Do you mean this thing mkgriff. If so its only an open/close to let water through the heater matrix (I think)
This, coupled with turning on the fan should give you heat.
Saxon, if you stick your head down into the passenger footwell you can see the motor/valve and also see the bit of copper pipe which is the bypass for when this valve is shut. You should be able to feel this getting hot as the engine warms up.
Its simple to check if the valve is working or if the mechanism which aligns motor to valve is out of kilter.
You can disconnect the motor from the valve easily and move the valve by hand to see if it makes any difference. If it does you know the problem is with the motor/valve alignment. If you need to know how to do this drop me a line.
