Completely agree, but our past record on capital punishment isnt a particularly good one. For example, the last few we decided to hang, most have doubts on the original conviction. Hardly the best starting point to attempt to bring it back....

Maybe it was the process which was wrong....!?!? I dont know. Must admit though, my opinion of anti-capital punishment does waiver slightly when I read about criminals like that!

As is always the case in these debates - what would it achieve?

Every bit of research ever has shown that the death penalty doesn't work as a deterrent.
Which means the only reason for the death penalty is revenge, which IMO shouldn't be the basis for a justice system.
Besides, if murderers don't have the right to deprive someone of life, why should anyone else?

I always worry that one wrong conviction with the death penalty is too much.

I wish they would give solitary for life and mean it rather than some of the limp wristed attempts at sentencing.

And what does wasting our money keeping them in holiday camps, sorry prisons achieve?

If we have to keep them alive, then make that life as near to Hell as is humanly possible to get, no priviledges, no nice one to a cell crap etc etc.

And with today's technology, we have the means to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt if someone is guilty or not, if found guilty, then give them 12 months in which their defence can find the evidence to prove they didn't do it (if they didn't), if no evidence of forthcoming then save the public the expense of keeping them and shoot em!

Well apparently he is a "reasonably intelligent" bloke, who just happens to rape and steal from the elderly and sick to feed his drug addiction.

He sounds very clued up to me.

Someone like him should having all his skin cut with rusty razors then covered head to toe in salt until he dehydrates, then perhaps a public stoning of what is left.

Hopefully if he meets a nice chap inside, he might start the ball rolling...

Maybe we should build some gulags for this particular breed of scum?

I abhor the death penalty, in principle - although if this was my gran i would hand out a summary execution of this waste of skin myself, no ifs or buts.

In some cases "Maser" i would agree, those like huntley, yorkshire ripper and the likes where their is no shadow of doubt that they murdered.
I think where it gets complicated is when you get more than one person involved in the murder, like the two involved in the Anthony Walker case or the WPC who was shot recently.
Dont forget there has to be "beyond reasonable doubt" before you can send someone *Knowingly* to their death.

These two cases are worth a read.

Maybe, maybe not but it stops the offender from comitting further crime and saves us a whole load of money keeping them in prison for life (although most probably don't get that long and so get out with a chance to offend again), besides many penalties for minor offences, such as speeding, seem to be born out of spite and 'revenge' so why not for the absolute scum of society who IMO don't deserve to live.

People like that should be shipped off to 3rd world prison camps for the rest of their lives and made to work 100 hours / week hard labour building roads etc.

The problem with the death penalty is that its too quick. I imagine when your dead you will be incapable of thought, so you wouldn't be laying their dead, thinking "this death thing sucks". A life times worth of hell in a horrible prison seems far more cruel and justifiable to me.

What I fail to understand is when criminals are sentenced such as in the Anthony Walker case, they got life, but it doesn't mean life, one got 23 years the other 17 years and 4 months. Now as far as I am aware that will make them mid 40's when they are released. The judge shouldn't call it life because its not. And if they behave in prison, they will be out sooner anyway.

Why can't we say life and mean life like they do in America.

Nah, just lock me in a room with him

Either that or torture him, every day, for the rest of his life - hell, even give him the best food & medications just to keep him alive

I would apply the same treatment to Al Zarqawi et al too....

Life is a minimum sentence - not a maximum. Hence, if they mis-behave in prison, they don't get let out.

Trash Like this Criminal Simply do not deserve life .
He will obviously not amount to anything and purley for these wicked acts he should give his life up.
Get rid of Scum like this. Or Use him for Product testing instead of Animals.
At least that way he would provide a constructive service.

It makes me so angry when I read the sentences handed out to these sacks of Shite.
