A lot of the Scoob boys consider this and the Lamda "serviceable items" and replace as a matter of course, because of the consequences of them going on the turbo lumps....did my Type-R a few months before selling, bought the 996 and that had same prob a few months after buying!...DOH!

What's the story with these darned MAFs? I'm just getting a pair on my M5 under warranty, the M3's needed changing before that, and now Porsche need them too (I guess they're all the same design after all? The one on the C4S looked very familiar).
How can a manufacturer fit a part like this that isn't included in the service schedule yet requires regular replacement? And priced at like 300 rubs a time? (x2 for an M5)

The thing is, it's (usually) a thin wire that is heated by a small current. As you know from school physics, as a wire heats up it becomes more resistive (or is it less?
) and this resistance can be measured.
Stick that heated wire in the air intake, and as airs flows past it it cools the wire down. This changes the resistance and so provides a measure of the air flow (and also importantly the density) into the engine for accurate fuelling and better combustion.
But something so delicate as a heated wire (though I think it's usually packaged in a big boxy thing) in the air intake with all the ditry air coming in is very susceptible to wear/damage.
I'm pretty sure that's the low-down.
Modern cars.. so many sensors and everything to get those nice power curves, MPG and bhp/litre figures!

going to take the car to my local garage as they said ill need to connect it to the diagnotic machine to get he error code. Ill go and check the air intakes first after ive wrote this. one garage did say that it could be the air flow metre - if this is the case how much are these?? Thanks for all the advice by the way! Its also good to know the car will be even quicker wants replaced!

The ones that we make at our factory are a very,very thin wire thats wraped around a ceramic tube then sealed. end result looks like a conventional resistor. Not sure if its the same as the BOSH ones.
Quite common failure on diesel vectra's as well apparently

Steve I think MAF stands for mass air flow i.e air flow meter so it sound like you mechanic is agreeing with what the guys are saying.
get one straight from BOSH if you can they will be exactly the same.

According to Renntech any US Porsche starts flashing the engine check light and collecting codes in the ECU for any little thing, including the MAF sensor. When mine was playing up it didn't give any check lights and no codes were stored. Obviously Euro Porkers are more robust than our US cousins. The fact there are no codes does not negate the fact that you have a problem which in my experience is the MAF sensor.
