OK guys (and girls), I need some low down on my next choice of wheels. Previously owned a Griff 500 for 7 years, had to sell.. now own an A4 Quattro 3.0 Avant .... Time to go back to something special

Old man had a '77 930 3.0 turbo which was also fab so I have no bias ... I am torn between Porsche and TVR!

Choices (in no particluar order)
Porsche GT3 mkII (or mk I if someone can convince me that a 6 year old super-car is an ok buy?)

TVR Sagaris

Porsche 996 TT '02 ish (pushing the limits on running costs??)

C4 Convertible or TVR Tuscan mk2 Convertible (still like the idea of open top after the Griff)

Lots of questionss.. but hard earned cash.. need to get it right! Let me know your experiences if you've owned any of the above.
Cheers....

Personally I would have the GT3 mk2. There are some serious bargains around right now.

The Mk1 even more so and is likely, or so I've been told, to hold it value better (there being less of them etc) The engine in the mk2 is slightly stronger (as in more powerful) and the standard brakes better though. Depends on which looks you prefer.

I don't know a damn thing about TVR though and this doesn't help with the open top motoring I suppose, but if that's a priority why not a C4S cab with sports exhaust. You could do a lot worse.

lol

I currently run an RS and a Saggy-arse, but Sag is up for SOR at Racing Green if you're interested.!

I've had 4 911s and 4 TVRs and have to say, that the Porker is in a different leaque.
But my focus is more track orientated.
Sagaris is a great road car, IMO the best TVR ever built.. Speed Six reliability has been sorted out, I've no probs with my Sag.
The GT3 (RS) is hard to beat, when it comes to trackwork.

Good call.. but aren't they getting a little long in the tooth..? my old man spent a fortune keeping the 930 in running order (but then again he covered over 100k miles in it).

Rob,
Service/ running costs of the TVR seem to be the only negatives I've got back from both TVR and Porsche forums.. my nearest dealer is 150 miles away which is a pain in the ar$e, especially if the car needs to stay overnight. How have you found yours?

Is the GT3 as costly to run? 12k or 6k service interval?

Jules, my dealer is 120 miles away and it doesn't cause any problems. They come and collect it on a Transporter and leave me a courtesy car. Fortunately my car (fingers crossed) hasn't had to be recovered it has only been on the transporter for planned visits.

Aren't we all..? £50k on something that will cost another small fortune to play with at weekends (as finely put by MO 1/2) .. it only makes sense to us nutters!!

However, I'm sure their are plenty horror stories from everyone on both Blackpool and Stuttgart toys, it truley is a difficult choice !! How doed the Gt3 I compare to the GT 3 II?

In all honesty I think you'll find that a GT3 is a considerably more robust machine than anything from one of the home grown marques - motorsport really does improve the breed. Of course cars do go wrong, but if I were a betting man...

If you search on this forum for GT3 you'll find a few threads comparing the 2 iterations. Its a debate that can cause some controversy though, so not really worth thrashing out again when its all been covered!

I dont find my gt3 expensive to run at all.

In fact its hardly anymore expensive than any other porsche ive owned.

if you track it, you will go through brakes more quickly. But other costs such as servicing, insurance, warranties etc cost pretty much the same.

As for your choices? well I am biased of course, but Id say go for a GT3 mk1 or Mk2. Looking down the list of cars you are thinking about,

its the only one set to become a legend.

I personally would not like my TVR dealer to be 120 miles away, but each to his own.
Would have thought running costs are similar for both types of car, but I generally have not had my cars long enough to warrant regular servicing.

If you want to do regular trackwork, then buy a GT3, no question.. which one depends on budget, but MK2s are very well priced at the mo, and IMO are an absolute bargain.

Weekend buzz factor in the Sagaris is fairly unbeatable, but you need a daily runaround.. and be prepared to lose the Sag every now and then, when things go wrong.

For an overall workhorse, with big power and all weather grip, reliability and bullet proof mechanicals + the badge .. get a 996TT.

I still have a '77 V-Dub (No laughs please this is the spiritual great grandaddy of the 911) for a daily run about from my Griff days, so really the car will be a sunny day and weekend toy. However, I think you have a point 996TT I need something that is fun and dependable...

Cheers for the feedback

It's running very well Kurgen. It has just done 3K miles in just over 2 months and we love it to pieces.

It's a shame your selling your sag, although I must admit to having looked at it on the web.

I think you were collecting your Tam, the same day as I was collecting Sag.

It's a shame to let the Sag go, but we have 4 cars at the mo, including my wife's car and the kiddie mover. Also the Sag and RS are too similar in purpose and usability.. so had to make the choice. Unfortunately for the Sag, the RS provides the better overall package, especially on track.

Cheers

Yes that was me. I can understand your decision, but still a shame as it is a stunning car. I am sure it will sell very quickly.

My vote goes to the GT3 MkII.

They are incredible value right now. You can buy a very low mileage, never been tracked, factory fresh example for close to £50K.

With a few options these cars were £80K new!

It might look a like a regular Carrera with an Aerokit but the GT3 is so much more.

Here's a link to the original press release which goes into detail in typical german style.

Also Porsche SA still has live GT3 pages on their web site here .

Servicing is once a year or every 12k miles. Minor service one year following by major service the following year. Also brake fluid changes every two years. Perhaps one of the resident experts here on the board can give an indication on typical service costs for minor and major. I would say budget £1K a year and you won't go too far wrong. The official Porsche used warranty is another £750 a year.

I bought one last month as a daily driver and so far I love it.
