Moved to a new house recently. Living room has a 5.1 amp and five ceiling speakers laid out correctly....3 in front and 2 behind the sofa. But no Sub Woofer.

So...whats a good one to get and from where?

As little as poss. Less than £200 for sure and ideally less than £100. However want to get something decent so quality will come first before budget.

All your home entertainment speakers are in the ceiling?

A sub will improve the quality of the sound overall but as the speech and front effects arent as close the screen as possible its not going to sound great.

Something around £100 should be more than adequate.

Sneak into WHSmiths and pick up what Hi-Fi, then flick to the back section. Here you will see all the current subwoofer models with price and brief review.

Do you have a 5.1amp to power these speakers?

It's actually been done really well. There is a large plasma on the wall with the central speaker dirictly above it and the left and rights about 5 feet either side - the effects work well.

Richer sounds will be your friend in this case.

Check that you need an active or passive sub.

Your amp / 5.1 decoder may only separate the signal to the sub, rather than offer a speaker (amplified) output. Check the back of your amp - if there's only a phono connection you will either need another amp to power the sub, or an active sub that has the amp built in.

Hope that helps

Chris

How are you measuring your 600w?

The Hi-Fi got its act together years ago and quoted rms otput into 8ohms per channel, rather than some form of peak power with all channels added together.

Car audio and computer speaker systems seem to quote peak figures and add them all together. It's in the same league as digital zoom on camcorders. The bigger the number the better and forget about the real world.
