I saw him many times at various shows.Always very good. I was watching that episode of Piece Of Cake just the other night with the bridge flying, as per the pic on that site.

Thanks for all the fine shows of such a great aircraft Ray

I have the book 'How they made Piece of Cake' and there's photo of Ray flying under the bridge - about 7 feet off the water (Winston Bridge in County Durham, a 100-foot wide semicircle).

Ray is one of the few who could actually say:

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

Sorry to hear that.

For those who don't know, his son Mark was killed a few years ago displaying their 109 in Spain.

What's going to happen to the ofmc now...?

I hope we all get to see MH434 flying again...
A sad day indeed.

Saw him display a Spit at Fairoaks airstrip many years ago. He always arrives over a display at exactly the scheduled time and we were told he would appear flying from right to left.
Over to the right was a line of poplar trees. One tree was missing from the line so that was where Ray emerged, on a knife-edge, with the upper wing tip well below the tops of the other trees. This was no controlled, slow, barely above the stall, pass this was almost flat out with a flip onto the other edge half way across the field. He said later this was so everybody could see both the bottom and the top of the plane rather than just the side.

A great loss.

Sad news.

Saw Ray and Mark Hannah display in Scotland years ago in Spit and Me109. They tailchased down into the valley behind the airfield and for a few seconds remember seeing just the two fins flying along the horizon!

RIP

Sad, very sad.

Wonder if he's up there flying with his son....

He was a rare kind of man - and quite a role model for younger pilots aspiring to fly aircraft like Spitfires.

That's a great shame, I've enjoyed many of his displays over the years. Here's hoping he and Mark are enjoying themselves locked in an eternal mock-dogfight somewhere, grinning like schoolboys. RIP both...

RIP Ray

I must have first seen him with the Arrows when they were using Folland Gnats way back in the 70's and then his early displays with MH434. One of my favourite images is the "Goodwood Straight" one from the first Revival - he'll be sadly missed.

Tragic news! Another name to strike off the Goodwood Revival list.

How did he die?

I will genuinely never forget his Goodwood displays during the cricket match (as private displays the normal rules went out the window). This year the low cloud forced him to scratch the usual rolls, and stick to low passes. A Spitfire at full chat, wing dipped, at 20' is a life-affirming experience. Especially if you're underneath it...

Thanks Ray
