why do people put full beam on after you overtake ?
Discussion
Okay so I'm lucky enough to live in a place where I get to drive cross country B road for 8 miles to and from the motorway to get to work. This time of year it's dark, but I know the roads pretty well, where there's likely to be mud, puddles, ice etc.
there are a couple of very long straights and if it's safe I WILL overtake. when I get along side the car I'm overtaking I will put my full beam on, so I can see all the road and so the numpty can see why it's best to use full beam on a country road if there's nothing coming the other way.
This seems to result in them turning their full beam on as i move over in order to burn my retina via my rear view mirrors.
Why ? WHY ? WHY ?
Is it to say : How fecking dangerous to overtake in the rain and dark ?
Or : How dare you overtake when I had no idea you were actually there, because I've not looked in my rear view mirror since 1987 and that was by mistake?
Or : How dare you overtake in that pikey looking C reg Cavalier that can't pssible be road legal - if I could actually see anything with these glasses (which have been fine since 1987) I would take down your number and report you ?
It is beginning to piss me off !!!

I get the same thing, I think it's a symptom of the dumbing down in society . . . just because they don't have the skills or thought processes to overtake they assume nobody else does either so you must have been doing something dangerous.
Because they have an over inflated opinion of themselves and believe that they know how to drive perfectly (the less you know the more you think you know !) they feel it their duty to tell you how silly you've just been.
The same car will often have 7 kids and a small dog running around loose inside with all the windows misted up and driver will be on her phone to her mother who has probably received a running commentary of how she's almost been forced off the road by a lunatic doing 60mph in the dark an how the govt should do something like install more speed cameras on country lanes before somebody kills her children.

I drove 120 mile on the A5 today in a Merc Vito. There were many LGVs doing 40 with a queue of dozens behind each all apparently content to bumble along behind. I safely (IMO) overtook about 90 vehicles in 60 miles without straying much over the speedlimit often using the central red tarmac and hatched zones. I was flashed 9 times and beeped once. Most of the others were too trancelike to notice ?
matchless said:Unlikely, as more often than not folk bimbling along mindlessly in a long queue are aware of all relevant road safety issues (they're not speeding, what more could one ask) and good road manners, so they always leave a safe distance to the car in front which allows nasty queue jumping speeders to re-join the left hand side of the carriageway smoothly and uneventfully. Obvious innit.
you didn't cut them up did you?

Round here they tend to do it because they believe that everyone has a driving skill as low as theirs, therefore since they cannot drive in a professional and trained manner as per the test, nor can anybody else.
f
kers - if someone wants to overtake me I make the effort to move over because even though I have confidence in my driving abilities, I am willing to accept that there are others better than me who wish to go faster.
Tolorance is the key, however there is very little left in this society
If someone flashes you when you have overtaken them, give them a little wave and feel good in the knowledge that they will be pissed off many many more times by competant drivers
Cheers,

Generally if have some muppet driving right up close to me, will let them over take and if dark might full beam for a few secs as some have the habit of cutting in too close, almost as if it is my fault for not really caring about going as fast as possible all the time
Worst ones are the bikers who seem to be on full beam all the time, so that they can be seen ?, rear view mirror has no flip switch, simply an electronic darking system which takes a while....
But once overtaken, it goes back to dipped beam

Liebchen - ist after you pass test und gain experiences that you really learn how to drive - und those with at least one working brain cell will at least look at improving as constant.

True - und these intolerant idiots are also complacent with it.

I usually give a little wavey or an indicator wobble to say "ta ever so!" If they switch a high beam on me - then either hazard flash goes on three times to say "hold on mate" - but if I can und ist safe to do so - I just accelerate out of the beam.
Just in case?

though.Last week on my way home from work i was behind an old guy doing about 30 in a NSL. It was a country road and it was dark. One of the reasons this guy was going so slowly was the fact that he wasn't using his full beam and therefore could ony see about 15 feet in front of him. I spent a couple of miles cursing him and then when a clear stretch presented itself I executed a safe and legal overtake. It was at this point that the old guy suddenly found his full beam. He flashed me repeatedly and then switched them on permantantly. I considered stopping at the net T-junction and getting out but decided it wasn't worth the bother, I simply put some distance between me and him

I'm afraid that when I got to the T junction. I stopped put my hazard lights, rear Fogs on, and brake lights. AND wAITED.
when they got behind me I put my reversing lights on too. And let the car roll back about a foot, Then I drove off. The look on the WOMAN's face was priceless when she thought I was going to ram her. If anyone asks I have no idea what you are talking about and it's all lies I type on the internet.
I mean as if a Family man like me would get angry.
