Extra gauge - cutting holes in the dash?

Want to open a 52mm hole in the dash for an oil temp gauge... I remember from doing a starter button install that the material behind the veneer is as hard as a hooer's heart, so anticipate a fun time Any ideas better than using a diamond encrusted tile 'saw' (one of those cable things that fit in fretsaw handle)? Want to do with the dash in situ if poss.

A quality hole saw, the sort pipe fitters use. You're brave cutting it in situ.

It's mild steel isn't it? I guess most hole cutters of that size would be designed for woodworking, but if you started with a metal cutter it should be OK? Personally wouldn't fancy doing it in situ though, fixing the wrecked veneer and damaged wiring etc will be a much harder job.

Hole saw will shatter the veneer. Use a hole cutter from Frost.

You will need to mark up and cut the veneer with a modeller's knife first then use a hole cutter to gently press out the hole. The veneer cracks and shatters at the slightest vibration so power tools are not a good idea
