DO YOU NEED PARKIN SENSORS ON A BOXSTER
Discussion
I had the loan of a 996 demo car earlier in the year that was fitted with the park assist thingy...
before I ordered my car I knew this was something i was never going to add to my specification, but found it to be less effective than I thought,,You get a serious of beeps that sound and the closer you get to an object, just before you are going to make contact it becomes a continuous tone...I was parking and getting this continuous tone for about 2.1/2 feet away from a wall or parked car,so was reversing another 1 foot or so to get into the space... I also found that it was happy relating to an object directly behind the car,if you reversed into a space at an angle then it would be silent way before you expected it to be.So I ended up using my usual level of observation in parking anyhow.
One other thing I do not like with it is the wart like sensors that are stuck on the rear bumper,it is a detail that attracts your attention rather than looking at the lines of the car.
I get the feeling Porsche offer this extra as the Merc crowd who were getting tired with the old SL couldn't entertain a Porsche without such neccesaties they had become accustomed to.
I wouldn't and didn't get this extra, but if you are getting a Boxster and it helps to get the price towards £50k I woild think it is an absolute must have accesory.

I reckon the 'S' is the one to get too, myself. But I would, wouldn't I.
And besides (presses tongue into cheek) who'd buy a car with the engine in the wrong place...it should be in the middle, everyone knows that. (removes tongue).
Oh..and the answer to the question is...
NO!
Although the shape of the car does tend to fool you into think the back is closer to you than it is and the front is further away.
You'll find yourself puttin the front skirt over the kerb and the rear miles away from the bollard at first. All you need to do is get a mate to stand at either end of the car and take a good look from the the driver's seat. Once you can remember where the corners of the car are...its no trouble.
Parking sensors...waste of time.

I've got the reverse sensors fitted on a 911. I find them very useful. Initially I got used to having them on an S-class Merc that I sometimes borrow, since then I've taken the approach if you can get them go for it.
I calculated the cost of the option was roughly on a par with respraying the rear bumper having got it wrong!
