Can't help much with hotels as we stayed in a hostel type room (interrailing in 2002). Anything within the ring road gives good access to everywhere. Don't remember any dodgy areas around that area.

Any other questions, I may be able to help more.

When someone asks you what you're doing at the weekend, don't say "I'm going to Krakow".

Can recommend the Copernicus, which is a short walk away from the square, or a close second would be the Pod Roza which is even closer to the square. Both are quite expensive for Poland but you asked for a nice hotel.

Andy.

Wawel Castle is a must-see, Sukiennice/cloth-hall, cathedral (every hour a bugle signals the passing of time from each window at the top of the one of the cathedral towers - listen to each one carefully - there's a story there) plus the restaurants and cafes. There is also a small Jewish quarter. Salt mine (Wieliczka) is a good day out. Auschwitz is a whole day and is a very memorable, moving trip (but not the only reason to go to Poland and krakow - for may people that's the only one and it breaks my heart when all people talk about is Aushwitz).

To drink : Zubrowka , Citronowka and Wisniowka
To eat: Steak tatar, bigos, pierogi, barszc (beetroot soup)
Not hot on hotels - a fair few to chosse from.

Have a great time!

I was there for a few days this summer. Obviously explore the town (and its square) and the castle. A trip to Auschwitz/Birkenau is a MUST. Can't really explain why, but you have to go.

Salt mines are brilliant.

Auschwitz is quite an experience. It was virtually empty of people when I went.

I stayed in a little hotel about a minute from the square. Wasn't very convenient for work but it was nice and close to the bars and restaurants.

Spent a week or so down in an old castle type of place in Sucha Beskidzka (sp?) too. Their onion soup was fantastic

Thanks all, just trying to get booked into Pod Roza at the moment.

Looking forward to it now, even though the forecast is -2 and snow .

Once again, thanks for the info...
