I am getting an annoying rumble from my 996 C4 (sounds like a bearing) at anything above 20mph. It's really only noticable in the driver seat and sounds like it's coming from the front wheel. Doesn't feel like a bearing as the noise cannot be affected by weaving. The car has the original (98) Pzero Asimmetrico 225/40 ZR18's which are a bit over 1/2 worn. Only covered 18k. Everybody tells me it's the tyres, but it doesn't really sound like road noise, which can also be heard from surface to surface. I am new to 911's and it's annoying me now!

It might be the tyres, there is at least one type of tyre that I've come across that after a while would go slightly out of round and cause a "wheel bearing gone bad" style noise. Considering how old the tyres are I would want to get them changed ASAP especialy on such a high performance car.

For a proper diagnosis you really need to get to a decent garage.

cheers, the local OPC couldn't hear anything out of the ordinary, but I'll be looking to change the tyres as you say. There seems to be a general consensus that the Pzero's can be pretty noisy when half worn. Hoping the tyre change will fix it.

7 year old tyres!!!

Replace them now. They may well be dangerous.
