Ever had one of those chance meetings where someething unexpected happens? Well, I went for some transistors and ended up being invited to join a male voice choir! Here's how...

Went to Maplins to buy some transistors. Amazingly enough, they were in stock.
Old guy behind me in queue drops a fiver. I make joke about it.

By way of idle chat he remarks that it's warmer today than it has been. I say my feet are telling me otherwise; I've been in the garage most of the day.

He tells me how he used to run three Austin Sevens and had to swap parts between the three to keep one running at any time. I say I prefer my cars more modern, though of equally suspect reliability!

We talk cars as we exit the shop. Then he asks me where I live. Turns out he knew a guy from here, died a while back, very suddenly, of cancer. Apparently they sang together in the same male voice choir.

I say that whilst I like singing, I'm no pop idol. He says pop singers aren't really singers anyway!
Next thing, I have the Xmas album CD from the Hartlepool male voice choir and the phone number of the director, with an invitation to join them for a rehearsal!

Bizarre, and that's before I have any rum

Ah, the 'Hartlepool male voice choir'... you know what that's a euphemism for don't you? Think London Tunnellers

Hartlepool you say, better make sure you don't look like a monkey.

Wasn't the maplins in teeside park by any chance? I was born and raised in Hpool, but don't hold it against me. Think i've actually had the pleasure of seeing the Hpool male voice choir as well!

Is being in front of a male choir a good place to be,
I mean in a 'Winslett/Titanic' way you understand

Eh, hangin' round shops with strange men,

accidentally on purpose (dropping) currency on floor

oh dear you seem to have dropped the soap

It was indeed Teesside Park. My recent ancestors were Hartlepudlians too (in fact my dad grew up in Haverton Hill: it was that much of a sh!thole the council bulldozed it in the '70s!).
I live within spitting distance of the Tees flyover. And the chemical plant. And the prison. Oh, and the sewage works

God I love it here...
