I always pay very promptly wrt ebay transactions (normally as soon as the action has ended). I have one guy who I paid 3 mins after the auction ended, and 1 week later no feedback. I mailed him to ask for feedback and to know whether the item has been shipped or not. I've been out of the office so it may well have arrived. However, he stated he will only leave feedback after I have left it for him. Is this allowed? I have completed myside of the deal, paying, but my feedback now appears contingent on his...

this seems to fairly normal.
although if i get the item, and its as described ,i leave good feedback without waiting for them.
if i have a problem with anything, i try and sort it out before i leave feedback.

Sorry, are you saying it is normal for the seller to wait for the buyer to leave feedback? As a buyer the only thing I should be judged on is my speedy payment, no?

As a seller I leave feedback as soon as I am paid, even if I run the risk of not getting it recipricated.

There is however a growing trend of "I won't leave you feedback until you leave me +ve feedback". My view? If they deserve feedback leave it. If they don't, then don't. Pretty simple really.

Sort of. I'm sure that there is an underclass of people who wait for the item to arrive in perfect condition then complain that it's less than perfect to try and get money back etc. They probably want to wait and make sure you're not one of them...

As a seller I rarely leave feedback until the buyer has. If they don't, for whatever reason, I just forget about it.

So what happens when 2 of you meet?

"No you..."
"No, after you..."
"No really, you first..."

Seems the whole principle of feedback breaks down if the seller waits for the buyers feedback.

Too right. It's one of the growing number of malpractices on ebay that they don't sort out. Basically people like him will never get bad feedback because it becomes a tit-for-tat kind of thing. Not how it was meant to be used.

I have been on ebay for five years - and the qualit of the service has deteriorated massively over that time. Ebay's customer service is virtually non-existent, and because they have such market domination they don't need or have to care.

There are a huge amount of scammers on ebay, and the company have actually made it easier for them to operate by changing their registration procedures.

If I am selling, I now don't leave feedabck until the buyer has received the goods, is happy with them, and has left me positive feedback. A couple of experiences with utterly unreasonable buyers who have attempted to blackmail for discounts etc after receiveing the item because I had already left them positive feedback made me change my approach.

If everyone was fair and reasonable it wouldn't be a problem, but sadly they arent. So it is.

The buyers responsibility is to pay promptly. That's all. As soon as the buyer has paid promptly, the sller should leave feedback. Just another example of ebay malpractice that they fail to regulate

I agree that this is how it should work in principle - however a large enough percentage of buyers are unreasonable or downright dishonest for this to work in practice.

Yup, I had this. Sold a mini fridge to someone, and as soon as I saw the address I thought I might have problems - university student. So I got the money, sent it and left positive feedback. Then they emailed me to say the door was broken and its wasn't as described, so they wanted their money back. What made it obvious they were lying was the fact that they said the packaging was in perfect condition, so "either it was broken when you sent it or someone opened it at the post office and broke it!".

I told them no money would be refunded until I got photographic evidence of the damage and the packaging. The photos never turned up, they never replied. And they didn't leave feedback. I was buggered as they had tried to screw me, yet I'd already left positive feedback.

For the love of God - Does it really matter I mean in the grand scheme of things - you got what you wanted and paid for it.. either it was in good condition or it wasnt.. put the feedback on and stop being so whiney

If the worst thing to happens to you this week is that a tosser on ebay doesnt give you feed back before you give them theirs then I think you're doing ok!!

I changed my approach after leaving +ve twice and getting -ve in return. Also, I sold a clock to someone with many hundreds of feedback and gave him +1, but never got any back. He didn't answer any requests such as 'Did you get it OK?'. When I checked his 'Feedback left for others' list I was stunned to see he had only left two, ever!

Now, if I'm selling, I let the buyer go first so at least I've got some bargaining power. I used to do it when they paid, but now I'm old and cynical

Good on you. With the benefit of your hindsight I'd probably recommend insuring it and passing the cost on to the buyer in the postage charge...

Yes, it does matter, especially if you are trading on eBay as a business. Feedback rating underpins the whole of eBay. If you have a low rating or a poor percentage then people won't buy from you and/or won't sell to you. It's a far from perfect system, but if you want to use eBay then you have to consider it.

As for getting a life, some small companies have their main business on eBay so things like this are actually quite important to them.

Perhaps instead of spouting off semi-offensive brainless drivel, you should consider getting a life?

Think you'll find that fraud and deception (allegedly) underpin ebay the moderators are inept to say the least at monitoring, what is sold by whom and whether or not the items are genuine Basically unless ebay themselves face a threat of a lawsuit they don’t give 2 shades of shit what goes on!!
As a small business.. If your whole empire rests on ebay.. shame on you set up a web site of your own (speculate to accumulate and all that) and stop whining when another business man/woman (an I use that term in its loosest sense) fails to meet your expectations..
I apologise for the 'get a life comment' if it offended - but you get out what you put in.. If ebay is the best oportunity that a small business has then I quit while I was ahead..

If you paid quickly, and gave the seller no other problems then just leave honest feedback, I doubt he will try and screw your rating for no reason. I've never had a problem with leaving feedback first, either buying or selling. If it was a good deal I leave it as soon as I get chance and after 4 years ~250 deals I still have 100%!.
