Over the past few months our local Unwins has had no deliverys, There not alone, I have noticed all the others on my travels are in the same postition.

Our local store ran out of beer and ciggs weeks ago and this week they have no stock on the shelves and have shut up shop today as there is no stock to sell.

The staff told me months ago there had been a take over and as a result of these they had been suffering delivery issues, but they had been told there would be a "bumper" delivery before Christmas.

Seems like this business is in several trouble, its the only Offy I can walk to when half cut, some I am a little concerned.

Anyone know whats happening with them, out of interest ?

UNWINS, one of Britain’s biggest off-licence groups, has been forced to seek an emergency cash injection to see it through the Christmas trading period.

The group, which operates nearly 400 stores across the UK, received a multi-million-pound payment from its owner, DM Private Equity within the past fortnight. It is understood the money will cover general working-capital requirements, including payments to suppliers.

The injection comes only months after DM bought Unwins in a deal valuing the company at just over £30m. The extra cash will not prevent a fresh round of job cuts, with some 130 staff expected to be made redundant.

Unwins’ plight highlights the growing pressure on specialist drinks retailers from the buying power of the big supermarket groups. Terra Firma, the private-equity group that owns Unwins’ larger rival, Threshers, is rumoured to be looking to offload its investment.

Unwins has also suffered supply-chain problems that have resulted in severe stock shortages. Unwins and DM Private Equity both refused to comment. DM bought the company in March, bringing an end to 84 years of ownership by the Wetz family.

It's the old story - complete dominance of the retail sector by the large supermarket groups.

I try to do this!

But my local offie is a Tesco express, the next one to that has changed owners, I used this one all the time as the bloke who ran it always had a chat with you when you popped in and as I payed for his mortgage with my beer consumption he'd always 'do special deal for you my friend'....

However the new bloke thinks selling out of date Fosters and imported ciggis is ok!

A few people are going to be sweating on this news. Quite a number of units let to Unwins were sold off by one of the big property companies at auction a little while ago. The private investors piled in and paid way too much. This won't do their portfolios any good.

Seems like the Wetz family were pretty smart and DM pretty stupid.

I guess they weren't shrewd enough to grease the palms of Nu Labour like the likes of Tesco.

I was told by an Unwins manager that there was something amiss with the accounts which has resulted in them having to sell off stock to raise cash. I'm surprised I've not seen anything in the papers about it.
