If the laptop is only running 95 then am guessing that it is on the old side - are you sure that it up to the job of running xp. I upgraded an old laptop running 98 (333mhz and 128mb ram) and it ran so slowly that I had to take it off again. If I had paid for it I would have been mucho annoyed - if you can do it for free then it is worth a go, just make sure you have your 95 discs on standby.

I think it's unlikely you will get much joy out of a laptop that used to run 95 by upgrading it to XP.
XP wants, nay needs, as much RAM as you can throw at it and a farily serious processor to boot, likely your laptop just won't provide that.
What spec is it?
We're currently umming and ahhing over a new laptop and thinking the models that are shipping with 256MB RAM really aren't going to cut very well it with XP - I'd be pretty surprised to find a Win95 laptop running with that amount of RAM.

Yep XP is a no go on anything that was shipped with or is running 95. You *might* get away with 2000 with some heavy tweaking but otherwise i think 98 might be your only hope...
Depends on the laptop - I took a Dell latitude CPx (450Mhz P3 processor) from 95 to 98SE and then on to XP but I upgraded both the hard disk (it died) and the ram to half a gig. Not the fasted machine and won't play full screen video but OK for browsing/e-mail etc. I would suggest that this is the minimum spec though....
