I got a bollocking off them for saying that I now painted the numbers on the National Lottery balls. They said I hadn't entered into the spirit of the website. Or something. Miserable sods.

Sorry probably my fault, I paint the numbers on the lottery balls and didn't like anyone else taking the credit so reported it.

Wasn't there a whole fuss over people posting bitchy things in their profiles? Kind of like, bullies reunited...... so I suppose they monitor what people say a bit more closely.

Sounds like just being back at school, the nerds and nancies getting bullied by the cool kids, except this time it's online, in middle age, with the owners of Friends Reunited being the teachers and head masters.

So sad really isn't it.

I was just about to post that

Strange timing as well, you'd think they were worth much less now compared to say 3-4 years ago when the hype about the site was at it's highest.

Still, good work by the founders! Hope most of that £120m is theirs.

Husband-and-wife team Steve and Julie Pankhurst, who set up the website with their business partner five years ago, are set to net about £30m from the deal.

Mr Pankhurst said the business was now "all grown up - it is time for my wife Julie and I to let go knowing it is in safe hands".

Yeah, I bet that was their first thought when the offer landed on the table

Some months ago I looked at their numbers - which weren't that amazing. Can't remember exactly, when I'm next in the office I'll post them on this thread. From a P&L perspective there's no way the company's worth £120m - but a company is worth what anyone's prepared to pay for. There's hope for you yet Ted.

It means that between them readers read 15,000,000 pages a month on our site. (You are reading one page now).

We get 600,000 unique visitors to the site each month (that's counting you once, even if you visit every day).

As srebbe says, website traffic is starting to command high valuations once again despite underlying businesses generating nowhere near the profit that justifies those valuations.

The idea behind FR is fab, but what a horrific bit of implementation. The site is badly put together and hard to navigate through inconsistency and complexity, it is slow as hell either through under-investment in server / bandwidth capacity or crap code and whoever designs the graphics should be shot...!

The place I used to work at could have knocked out FR in a week, running 10 times faster, 10 times easier to use and with better graphics. As has been said - it's all in the idea...!

Selling banners must be one of the disheartening jobs around. People want to pay absolutely nothing for them but expect the world from them. As a guess PH has an easier job because its base is within smallish but prestige marques, that also attract the dreamers like me. However, easier is rather subjective because a lot of forums are hugely successful and raise virtually no cash. We advertised on one very large car forum - got a stunning deal because they were so grateful for the money and their invoice was number 17 - from 3 years of trading! (Couldn't afford PH advertising at the time )
