Getting listed on Google
Discussion
I have a website that has been live for 3 weeks now, and I have submitted the URL to Google twice in that time. I have all the correct meta information and the site is well structured, but so far, it has not appeared on google. Are the spiders just slow or am I missing something?
Thanks, Simon

There's a keyword here (pun intended) links, links, links. Get one way links from directories in the category of the field your site is promoting. You can get listed in Google within 2 weeks just by linking to a site from one of your other sites without the need to submit to Google.
Forget the submission (also resubmitting puts you to the back of the que!) if you start a good linking campaign Google will find you eventually.

Good place to start is the DMOZ. Certainly google have historically used this to find sites. It's worked well for me in the past:
www.dmoz.org
Careful though - you must submit your site to exactly the right category as the DMOZ is moderated by real people.

I've been trying to get listed on DMOZ for years and it is damn near impossible these days, mainly because they have a staggering backlog of submissions. So I wouldn't pin too many hopes on DMOZ if I were you.
There is a whole industry built around getting good google placment - do a search on SEO (Search Engine Optimisation*)
The current thinking is that meta tags and manual submission are useless and what really counts is incoming one-way links from other websites. Reciprocal links are far, far less useful than once they were. The other thing google likes is changing content - static sites that are seldom updated will rapidly slip down the google ranking.
Note that all this is just a laymans opinion - I'm sure a SEO expert will be along to slap me down shortly.
(* - or Optimization, depending on British or American spelling)
