When our loo gets flushed we get this droning noise through the pipes which goes on for about a couple of minutes ... changes volume and all sorts - turning the cold water tap makes it either stop or get less loud. Turn the tap off and it starts again ...

Has only started in the last couple of weeks ...

Is it some kind of air trapped in the pipes ... ? Don't say I've got to drain the system to get rid of it ... Can I bleed it somehow

Any ideas anyone?

Sounds like a rogue turd. You might need to 'go in deep' to flush it out.

In the cold water inlet?

Sounds more like a pipe thats not secured properly to me. Have a good look at the cold water inlet pipe and see if it has room to wobble anywhere - the wall fixings quite break easily....

WARNING SENSIBLE ANSWER

It sound like the ball valve (letting the cistern fill back up) isn't opening properly

Take the top off the cistern and see

seconded,

we had exactly this problem with the cold water header in loft, cured by a new float valve.

Might not be a case of valve not opening properly but the problem will be thereabouts.

Interesting. I have a loo that exhibits the exact same symptoms as described above - cracking open the cold tap on the nearest basin stops it. As far as I can see, the cistern & float mechanism are working ok. As a last resort, do you reckon replacing the internals would cure it?

Have you thought of trying explosives?

Possibly, they're only about £6 so a cheap experiment

If you can see they're working OK, surely you can tell if the noise is coming from there ??

"Rogue Turd" often known as the "Phantom Turd",they can turn up at the most unwanted times, normally when your trying to impress on a first date.

Fair point, but this is LOUD and seems to be coming from the pipework within the cistern, leading to it and under the floor.

I suggest you change the rubber washer in the ball valve. Only 50p from a good DIY shop. Changed mine recently when noisey, the vibration carried all around pipes in house.

Place two ordinary house bricks in your cistern. This will not stop the noise but will reduce the volume of water need to refill the cistern. So the noise will not last as long. Plus you will be saving water and helping the environment all at the same time. It's a win win situation..

Careful. Always need to be gentle with a stray turd....one false move and the situation can blow up in your face, if that happens the shit'll hit the fan

No No!! Simply temporarily remove one or both of the bricks as required. Then replace bricks when normal functionality resumes.

I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure
